Executive Editor, Digital News and Content

Helps lead the development, creation, production, design, optimization and presentation of news, service features, and AARP-related content across multiple digital and other platforms, including aarp.org, the AARP Now app, AARP Bulletin, and AARP The Magazine. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Oversees, guides, edits, and manages the work of staff content writers (and freelancers) to create substantive news, service features, and AARP-related content in a variety of digital formats for AARP’s 50+ demographic that can be used on appropriate platforms and cross-platform.  Leads the team to be creative, engaged, and enthusiastic. 
  • Works closely with the Strategy and Communications team as the lead representative of multiple content issues and develops appropriate strategy for AARP initiatives as disseminated through AARP digital content platforms.
  • Collaborates with editors, writers and digital production team to ensure digital content adheres to best practices, enhances the user experience and is presented in innovative and compelling ways, with an eye toward emerging technologies. 
  • Works collaboratively across platforms and helps develop and execute overall content strategy.  Oversees fulfilling of content needs with appropriate groups/departments/business units across AARP. 
  • Works closely with staff in developing strategies to disseminate initiatives and messages through AARP content platforms and with the business units as the primary representative of multiple content platforms. 
  • Helps oversee the recruitment and management of talented freelance writers, editors, web producers, and other digital experts as needed. 
  • Leads and manages the speechwriters in their various activities, including speechwriting for AARP executives, as well as developing message points, op-eds, and AARP bylined feature material for external sites and publications as needed. 
  • Oversees and/or coordinates internal print and outside print products with other major publishers when content is produced and designed by the team.
  • Demonstrates “One AARP” cultural attributes and behavior in all interactions by developing strong relationships with other departments across the enterprise to accomplish AARP’s goals.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related discipline and 10+ years of digital experience, including 8+ years of media management experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Excellent news judgment.
  • Excellent knowledge of AARP and issues of greatest importance to the organization, its demographic and its membership.
  • Strong background in digital journalism and content creation -- writing, editing, analytical, project management, SEO, data-driven, packaging, presentation and format -- and a proven record of developing compelling storyteling and innovative digital formats.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to prioritize and multi-task, while driving results.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while contributing to the organization’s goals and objectives.
