Helps lead the development and creation of news, features, and AARP-related content across multiple digital and other platforms, including the news-based stories, features, and content for the website and other digital platforms, news-based content for the AARP Bulletin and AARP The Magazine (ATM), and the daily news feed for AARP Now app, as well as content for the AARP business units. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serves as the lead representative of multiple content issues and develops appropriate strategy for AARP initiatives as disseminated through AARP content platforms.
  • Oversees, guides, edits, and manages the work of staff content writers to create substantive news, features, and AARP-related content for AARP’s 50+ demographic that can be used on appropriate platforms or cross platform.  Leads the team to be creative, engaged, and enthusiastic. 
  • Collaborates with staff to ensure content adheres to best practices, enhances the user experience, and is presented in innovative ways, with an eye toward emerging technologies. 
  • Works collaboratively and helps develop and execute overall content strategy.  Oversees fulfilling of content needs with appropriate groups/departments/staff. 
  • Works closely with staff in developing strategies to disseminate initiatives and messages through AARP content platforms and with the business units as the primary representative of multiple content platforms. 
  • Works closely with team colleague to assist in the creation and execution of core content. 
  • Helps oversee the recruitment of talented freelance writers and editors. 
  • Leads and manages the speechwriters in their various activities, including speechwriting for the E-Team, developing message points, op-eds, and AARP bylined feature material for newspapers and journals. 
  • Works with E-Team members and the Secretary of the Board in preparing appropriate and timely public speeches. 
  • Oversees and/or coordinates outside print products with other major publishers when content is produced and designed by the team.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related discipline
Skills/Experience: 
  • 10+ years of magazine, newspaper, and digital experience, including 8+ years of media management experience.
  • Excellent news judgment.
  • Excellent knowledge of AARP and issues of greatest importance to the organization and its membership.
  • Strong background in journalism -- writing, editing, verbal, analytical, project management, and presentation skills -- and a proven record of developing stories and storytelling.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to prioritize and multi-task, while driving results.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while contributing to the organization’s goals and objectives.
