The Employee Relations Senior Advisor (ER) will provide prompt and thorough investigation and resolution services to complex and sensitive employee relations issues with consistent application of workplace policies/procedures and compliance with federal, state and local employment laws and regulations. 

This role also serves to de-couple employee related investigations from the purview of the associated human resource director/business partner. To that end, the Employee Relations Senior Advisor provides advice, guidance, and solutions to HR Business Partners and business leaders to maintain a workplace in which all employees can thrive, drive business results, and live our company values.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Reporting to the Director of Employee Relations and Compliance, this role will be called upon to thoughtfully engage a broader stakeholder group that includes  HR Functional Leaders, HR Business Partners, Ethics Officer, and internal Employment Counsel in planned fashion while conducting investigations.

The Employee Relations Senior Advisor will help build and improve upon AARP’s Employee Relations  processes and proactive solutions to ensure positive employee relations. Additional responsibilities include utilizing insights and analytics to identify ER trends, diagnose ER problems and work collaboratively to identify and implement proactive business solutions to address these issues.

Functional duties include but are not limited to: 

  • Conducts thorough investigations in conjunction with Director of ER. As appropriate, the Legal staff and Ethics departments may be called upon for collaboration, advice and guidance.
  • Recommends the investigative plan and action to conduct an ER investigation.
  • At the conclusion of each investigation, documents an investigative summary letter and supporting documentation that succinctly captures the issue to be addressed, process taken to address, and recommended solutions. 
  • Collaborates with Director of ER on the development and review of supporting documentation for all involuntary separations to ensure AARP has followed progressive discipline methods where applicable. 
  • Facilitates resolution of employee issues and concerns in conjunction with HR, employees and management by providing guidance and consultation regarding problem solving, dispute resolution, regulatory compliance, litigation avoidance and strives to resolve internal conflict informally through appropriate conflict management and mediation techniques.
  • Provides advice and counsel to managers, supervisors and employees regarding laws, regulations, policies, procedures and practices related to employee relations matters.
  • Classifies and catalogs workplace trends; develops analysis of workplace issues, provides reports and recommendations to the Director of ER. 
  • As a trusted advisor and subject matter expert, regularly shares knowledge and learnings with the business and HR staff on ER best practices and ER matters, including performance management, terminations, restructuring, leave management and accommodation requests, workplace drug/alcohol/violence matters, conflict resolution, etc.
  • In consultation with the Director of ER and Compliance, works to author and advance improvements to AARP’s HR policies and procedures and monitors compliance.
  • Maintains a watchful eye on employee relations data and provides a thoughtful interpretation and analysis. 
  • Advises and assists in developing, planning, managing and implementing procedures to produce effective and efficient management of the employee relations function.
  • Assists in internal audits of employee relations issues and makes recommendations to resolve issues in accordance with Company policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Works collaboratively to ensure consistent application and interpretation of Labor Relations, Employee Relations, policies, contracts, and strategies
  • Conducts HR training and/or assists in the implementation of human resources initiatives or projects.
  • Evaluates and participates in staff development for the organization.
  • Applies knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and manages the interactive process for requests for reasonable accommodation ensuring appropriate, legally compliant solutions.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in related field required; advanced degree or coursework preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 8 years of HR proven experience in Employee Relations and achievements in a generalist capacity.
  • Deep expertise of federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Ability to manage and multi-task an ongoing caseload of workplace investigations.
  • Exceptional analytical skills, coupled with an ability to empathetically use insights to bring action/closure for a wide variety of employment based scenarios.  
  • Strong ability to apply effective listening skills, communicate unambiguously with stakeholders at various levels, and propose compelling solutions.
  • Ability to interpret and apply best practice HR policies.
  • Ability to remain highly organized while understanding and working through a matrixed stakeholder group.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, to include development of pivot tables and formulas.    
  • SHRM certification preferred.
