Emerging Platforms Lead, NPR One

We’re looking for a creative, driven, collaborative content leader for NPR’s emerging platforms, including voice-activated smart speakers like Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomePod.

Our ideal candidate will help us think creatively and pragmatically about how new and existing NPR content can be useful on new platforms, with special attention to the interactive and visual capabilities of new devices.  

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Emerging Platform Lead will:

  • help drive device users to DISCOVER that they can hear the NPR newscast, public radio member stations, podcasts and more on emerging platforms
  • work with stakeholders across NPR to PACKAGE existing content in new ways to serve and grow audiences.
  • support the CREATION of new content experiences that are useful and take advantage of how people interact with devices.  

The Emerging Platform Lead should:

  • Deeply understand the medium of audio and have experience as an audio content creator
  • Have experience creating or overseeing original content for new platforms, including interactive and visual storytelling
  • Appreciates the importance of navigating the intersection of content, platform, and business opportunities in growing and serving audiences. 
  • Has a proven record of success in a team environment. 

Essential Duties:

  • Identify new content opportunities on Smart Speakers
  • Create prototypes of new ideas for user testing
  • Identify content that would benefit from additional exposure on emerging platforms and manage the repackaging of that content
  • Develop workflows for production, editing, and implementation of new content presentations
  • Writes, produces, and implements promotions for the skills & experiences we create
  • Assist Managing Director in making sure we have an editorially sound presentation on Smart Speakers that represents NPR’s newsmaking and ‘idea’making role
  • Be the Smart Speaker liaison with Digital Media to ensure we have the technical infrastructure to meet our content and editorial goals
  • Occasionally handle on demand curation and on-demand production shifts
  • Work with NPM on editorially and aesthetically appropriate ways to integrate revenue opportunities
  • Keep abreast of industry changes and share research and developments
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in work experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Five plus years’ relevant experience
  • Track record of identifying editorial and promotional opportunities
  • Knowledge of Smart Speaker industry trends
  • Strong grasp of audio storytelling and hands on production techniques
  • Experience with editorial decision making
  • Ability to write engaging promotion copy
  • Proficiency with digital editing and multitrack production
  • Strong organizational and diplomatic interpersonal skills required
