Editorial Manager, National Geographic Bee

The Editorial Manager, National Geographic Bee oversees the development and editing of all question content and related materials for the Bee. Also oversees competition standards and procedures and seeks opportunities for Bee content extensions.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Editorial Process: Manages editorial process for school, state, and national Bee question content and associated materials, including editing all content. Establishes content outlines and schedules, and manages question development team (writers, reviewers, art, research).  Works with Bee researcher to ensure accuracy of material.  Works with internal units to ensure content reflects various National Geographic standards, media, and initiatives.  Works with production team to collaborate on editorial production and entertainment values for national finals. Writes content as needed.  Responds to content-related feedback and inquiries from parents, students, and teachers.  (60%)
  • New Content Development:  Develop and oversee a content advisory panel to create new question formats that require students to use critical thinking skills.  Works with entire Bee team to evaluate and implement new formats.  (10%)
  • Contest Standards and Procedures:  Assists Bee director in ensuring contest is implemented fairly and consistently, while maintaining entertainment values.  Reviews and edits rules and procedures language for all levels.  Communicates roles and responsibilities for Bee officials at all levels, and assists in training state Bee coordinators on contest procedures.   (10%)
  • Bee Content Extensions: Oversees development of Geo Bee content extensions, such as a digital school Bee experience, revisions to existing Geo Bee Challenge online game, and Geo Bee app. Collaborates with other business units on applications of Bee content. Assists Bee director in seeking fruitful external partners for Bee content distribution.  (15%)
  • Other duties for various Experiences projects as assigned. Collaborate within Experiences and throughout the Society around projects and content. Participate in department-wide programs and innovation. Stay current with NGS mission, research, initiatives and media.  (5%)
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree or higher
Skills/Experience: 
  • Five years experience in writing, editing, and publishing.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Strong knowledge of geography, social studies and science education.  Excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent computer skills including InDesign and Adobe Illustrator; strong research and editing skills are necessary; successful candidates will be outcomes driven, and have excellent attention to detail and be deadline-oriented.
