The Manager is responsible for managing the editorial review of all incoming media assets for Society. This position serves as the primary editorial lead reviewing all photos and videos submitted by Explorers and Fellows. At the direction of senior leadership, s/he will develop story ideas and content pitches around the incoming media assets. This position will work closely with Society education and marketing teams to fulfill their asset needs as well as with National Geographic Partners editorial units. S/he will develop a keen understanding of asset opportunities across the organizations and how best to fulfill them with Explorer and Fellow media.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Identify storytelling opportunities within the photos and videos submitted by Explorers in the field. Create and edit those stories, editorial concepts, and pitches from raw assets presented to team. Develop and manage workflow to present incoming Society content in the best possible manner to facilitate pickup by NG Partners (40%)
- Understand storytelling needs of NGP editorial units and NGS content teams (marketing, digital, video, education) and drive conceptualizing around teams on asset usage. Identify strategic opportunities to include Society content in Partners media projects. Manage tracking of content opportunities between both organizations. Co-manage content share process and Partners “first look” option on all content. (30%)
- Take lead in highlighting and promoting Society media assets for broad use on Society and Partners platforms. Build relationships with Partners teams and serve as lead content point of contact for Partners and internal constituencies. (20%)
- Work with Explorers on individual asset requests from content teams and act as resource for Explorers in the field (10%)
Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree.
Skills/Experience:
- At least 4-5 years video and/or photography editorial or storytelling experience, including video and photo editing.
- Must show evidence of previous storytelling experience and understanding of digital/social media.
- Familiarity with National Geographic Programs and initiatives a plus.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Strong editorial and visual storytelling skills. Demonstrated experience producing digital/social media content.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with multiple internal stakeholders.
- Attention to detail, ability to understand and prioritize multiple requests from different team members;
- Must be a self-guided, creative, highly organized, and motivated individual;
- Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to work through problem-solving on a new team;
- Must be capable of exercising flexibility, multitasking and working effectively with others.
- Knowledge of FinalCut, Premiere, and Lightroom required. Keen understanding of photo and video editing.
