The successful candidate will direct marketing and communications for science and exploration focused impact initiatives at the National Geographic Society. This position, which reports to the Vice President, Marketing and Engagement for Impact Initiatives, will direct the strategy and implementation of outreach and engagement. This will necessitate amplifying the right message, at the right time, to the right audience in support of the programmatic goals of the National Geographic Society.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Outreach Direction: Directs comprehensive marketing, communications, and engagement strategies to advance understanding, admiration and support for National Geographic’s research and exploration impact. Broadens awareness of key programs and priorities; and increases the visibility of its programs across key stakeholders in the scientific and conservation, academic and policy communities. Works with the events team to oversee strategic communications and marketing planning around key partnership, science and conservation events. (35%)
- Strategic Direction: Works with programmatic teams to collaboratively develop strategies and plans for promoting the Society’s impact initiatives. Manages related budgets. Develops and refines messaging to connect our work with key audiences in science, conservation, and policymaking. (20%)
- Audience Development: Proactively identifies, develops, refines and executes grassroots strategies to build new audiences. Works with internal stakeholders to maximize creative opportunities in social media, digital advertising, and email campaigns to maintain and build new audiences. (15%)
- Content Curation and Materials Direction: Works with our Storytelling team to ideate and curate content. Ensures content has a cohesive tone and style across platforms including targeted mailings, social media, blogs, web pages, email campaigns, fliers, newsletters, and promotional products. Manages a consistent messaging platform, including the development of messaging tool kits to ensure related National Geographic Society ambassadors are well equipped to deliver our impact messaging. (20%)
- Analytics and Reporting: Build campaign timelines, track campaign results, analyze statistics, and report on marketing efforts. Organize and prepare metrics reports for senior management on key priorities. (10%)
Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree
Skills/Experience:
- 7-10 years of experience in outreach, engagement, strategy, communications, or public relations, with demonstrable experience in integrated marketing and communications.
- Proven experience related to science, conservation or exploration a strong plus
- Must have strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Must have a strong understanding of media and a collaborative and strategic approach to new and ongoing responsibilities.
- Must have experience working under deadlines and managing both long- and short-term projects.
- Must be able to deliver both pragmatic and professional judgements to a range of groups, balance the needs of multiple priorities at any given time, and be comfortable managing projects independently.
- Proficiency with presentation software (Keynote/PowerPoint), Adobe, Salesforce CRM system, and event management technology.
