The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Office of Public Policy (OPP) seeks a dynamic and effective professional to advance LLS’s public policy agenda at the federal level, through engagement with federal legislative and administrative policymakers and allied stakeholders across the health care sector. Working closely with the Executive Director, Federal Affairs, the Director will lead outreach to relevant Congressional and FDA decision makers, lead LLS’s policy development process related to FDA issues, and direct legislative and regulatory analysis, internal and external communications, and stakeholder alliances related to portfolio issues.

The Director will partner with colleagues on OPP’s grassroots and communications teams to design federal campaigns that achieve change by mobilizing LLS volunteers and building external momentum for strategic policy objectives.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Shape and lead federal strategy on a portfolio of LLS policy priorities, including:
    • Improving and accelerating the development of new, safe, and effective diagnostics and treatments,
    • Making the cost of cancer care more sustainable for patients and the health care system, and
    • Promoting patient access to appropriate therapies.
  • Lobby Congressional offices and executive branch officials in support of LLS’s federal policy strategies. Monitor and respond to federal legislative activity, including bill introductions, Congressional hearings, and other activities. Analyze legislation and draft internal and external policy and advocacy materials, such as correspondence to policymakers, LLS volunteers, and other stakeholders.
  • Direct LLS’s FDA engagement, including shaping LLS’s policy agenda relevant to the FDA, spearheading LLS’s work on FDA draft and final guidance and regulations, and building relationships with agency officials and relevant stakeholders. In this capacity, manage LLS’s external consultant firm dedicated to the policy priorities related to FDA.
  • Collaborate with government affairs and advocacy team colleagues to build relationships between LLS volunteer advocates and targeted federal lawmakers, including assisting in the identification of volunteer leaders and in the preparation of talking points and other materials for their use in meetings with their representatives.
  • Develop and build relationships with key partner organizations, including representing LLS at coalition events and meetings.
  • Collaborate with the LLS communications team to advance LLS’s policy agenda by elevating LLS’s profile among journalists and other external audiences.
  • Assist in all aspects of the planning of periodic federal DC Hill days for LLS staff and advocacy volunteers, with special focus on the training of volunteers and executive leadership.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the LLS mission and programs to promote the field and campaign fundraising initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.  
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a related field, e.g. health care, government, communications.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 6 years’ experience in positions related to federal legislative and/or regulatory policies and processes.
  • Knowledge of and experience with federal legislative and regulatory processes, as either a Congressional staffer, federal agency employee, or advocate.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while juggling and coordinating multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Commitment to acting as a team player.
  • Ability and desire to become/maintain status as a federally-registered lobbyist.
