Director, Explorer Programs

Reporting to the Senior Director, Explorer Programs, the Director, Explorer Programs (Explorer Relationship and Opportunity Management), will develop and lead strategies and opportunities for Explorer engagement and deployment across all affiliations and relationships within the National Geographic Explorer community (Explorers-at-Large, Fellows, Emerging Explorers, Grantees, Awardees, etc.). The individual will act as a principal liaison and relationship manager between Explorers and NGS, maintaining and strengthening relationships. The Director will proactively identify and leverage strategic opportunities for Explorer deployment in addition to responding to -- and strategically managing -- requests for talent from across the Society, National Geographic Partners and external partners and organizations with the primary goal of promoting, spotlighting and leveraging Explorer expertise, content and inspiration in support of NGS programmatic priorities.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Relationship Management (20%):

  • Develop and lead the overarching strategy to identify opportunities for the promotion/spotlighting and deployment of Explorers
  • Establish relationships with Explorers. Manage expectations, communications and feedback around requests for Explorers’ time and expertise.
  • Act as a point person and strategic counsel to NGS executives in connection with Explorer talent management, program strategy and issue resolution.
  • Track and manage all internal and external requests for all Explorer talent.  
  • Lead the planning and implementation of Explorer-focused components of yearly Explorers Festival and other Explorer community-focused events and gatherings. 
  • Identify and track metrics to continuously monitor and evaluate program effectiveness and impact.

Explorer Talent Representation and Opportunity Assessment (20%):

  • Lead the Explorer request process, fulfilling internal and external requests for Explorer representation (editorial, commercial, philanthropic, educational, etc.).
  • Formalize the collection of Explorer assets within the Society
  • Refine, expand and formalize exploration talent identification resources (websites, databases, etc.) for various National Geographic stakeholder groups.
  • Lead the talent management and representation process for NGS, NGP (domestic and international) and external networks to all platforms including television, digital video, live events and educational engagements (e.g., Explorer in the classroom).
  • Refine, expand and formalize explorer talent resources (CRM database, external facing Explorer portal, community platforms, etc.).
  • Track and manage all internal and external requests for Explorer talent.  
  • Develop, maintain and enforce an Explorer rate card to ensure consistent and fair compensation for Explorers’ time and expertise.
  • Work closely with Media Innovation as well as Marketing and Engagement teams and other stakeholders on pitching of Explorer talent to NGP units, NGS divisions, and external media outlets.
  • Monitor and track Explorer activities and accomplishments using social media, Google searches and other tools.

Explorer Engagement and Tracking (20%):

  • Create and maintain talent files on Explorers, ensuring integration in CRM.
  • Strategically organize meetings, briefings and other similar sessions of individuals, teams and/or their projects for coverage in print and /or digital media, television, social and public speaking and live event opportunities, coordinating with key Explorer team members and other Society stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities and optimize presence at external events including key symposia, festivals, university campuses and academic conferences.  Work closely with the M&E team on design and execution of these opportunities.
  • Identify Explorer community members who demonstrate potential for leadership and/or who would benefit from training and other development/engagement opportunities.

Explorer promotion and spotlighting (20%):  

  • Help curate and oversee planning of Explorer events in close coordination with M&E and other divisions around the Society.
  • Lead the strategy to foster Grantee/Explorer community and exposure at NG HQ (e.g., “Closer Looks”), working closely with the Sr. Manager, Community, Grants program officers and Impact Media
  • Proactively identify opportunities for Explorer promotion at external venues or events to increase profile of Explorer talent while furthering Society programmatic priorities.

Explorer Database Management (20%):

  • Serve as the Explorer Programs team lead for coordination on Salesforce CRM.
  • Lead ongoing updates, refinements and enhancements to the CRM to ensure Explorer data are complete, accurate and appropriately refreshed on an ongoing basis.  
  • Serve as team liaison with NGS Digital, Strategic Systems, Information Systems, and Impact Media teams. Ensure external facing profile pages are synchronized to CRM and that public facing Explorer data are consistent and accurate.  Provide regular, timely key analytics through reporting tools.
Educational Background: 
Undergraduate degree required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 10+ years of experience supporting programs, communications/storytelling, and/or outreach.  Experience with CRM systems as well as with digital platforms (web sites, marketing automation platforms, social media platforms, etc.).

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Experience in talent cultivation and talent placement for events and speaking opportunities a must
  • Knowledge of research and CRM (e.g., Salesforce) databases important.
  • Cross disciplinary knowledge of science, communication, storytelling and media
  • Capacity to manage and prioritize many projects at one time in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.  
  • Highly effective written and oral communications skills essential. Ability to work flexibly at all times as part of an internal team and with all levels of staff.
  • Creative thinking and responsive problem-solving a must. Attention to detail and pro-active demeanor extremely important. 
  • High-level computer skills and a comfort with media, presentation creation and social media monitoring/posting important. 
  • Knowledge of the on-air talent business, talent agencies, including knowledge of talent contractual terms a plus. 
  • Strong project management skills
  • Creative thinking and responsive problem-solving a must.  
  • Should be an excellent multi-tasker and a self-starter.
  • Experience in the field of conservation education/training a plus
