Digital & Social Media Intern (Year-Round, Undergrad)

The Digital & Social Media Intern will assist the Public Policy Institute (PPI) with its digital and social media activities. The individual will help to maintain and develop one of AARP’s unique data tools and be a key member of the team charged with sharing AARP’s policy solutions and content through social communications tools.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The individual will be given administrative rights to assist with updating, and quality assurance activities for, an existing data/interactive webpage, DataExplorer, and be part of the team that helps maintain the integrity of the DataExplorer website. Activities include:

  • Checking website links to make sure they are functioning, updating website landing pages with new content (reports, blogs, infographics, links), uploading new “data in brief” links, and other administrative functions related to DataExplorer (training will be provided).
  • Individual will also work with the DataExplorer program manager to assist with trouble-shooting, tracking and managing content development, and uploading data, as appropriate. Requires using a project management tool, Trello (training will be provided).  

Responsibilities also include:

  • Being part of the PPI social media team and helping with social media activities. These include:
  • Helping to create event social media toolkits, working with other social media team members and with supervision - includes creating sample tweets before/during/after events, creating/researching.
  • hashtags, finding hashtags of speakers & organizations, adding infographics to tweets, and formatting social media documents;
  • Helping to create and posting regular daily tweets on @AARPpolicy and retweeting expert & relevant organization’s tweets. Responding to social media requests for information about papers and events. Scanning emails from Media Relations, setting up Google Alerts, and checking experts’ Twitter pages to find content for tweeting. Includes creating/timing/posting tweets through Sprinklr (training will be provided);
  • Prepping for and live-tweeting PPI events or events/conferences with PPI speakers and engaging with other Twitter users (e.g. responding to their questions);
  • Assisting with blog posts, such as adding/checking hyperlinks, finding/buying/adding images to blogs, adding bios, and posting blogs for experts. Includes use of WordPress (training will be provided). 
Educational Background: 
Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors.
Skills/Experience: 
  • AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers.  This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program. 
  • This internship requires someone with a high degree of comfort working with and updating websites. Training will be provided to learn platform-specific applications and job-specific requirements; as such, the candidate must be adaptive to learning and applying new skills. 
  • This position also requires someone who is familiar with and uses social media. Preference given to someone with high degree of familiarity with existing social media platforms, such as Twitter;
  • The successful candidate is very organized, focuses on details (very important skill set for this position), able to juggle multiple projects, able to work in teams but also function independently. Writing skills for social and website postings are necessary for this position so candidates will be asked to demonstrate writing competency;
  • The candidates should have familiarity with all programs in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  Experience with social media platforms such as Twitter, Sprinklr, WordPress is highly desired.
