Through our assurance audits, Internal Audit (IA) helps validate that risks are effectively mitigated and the organization is overall achieving or exceeding the expected and/or established financial, compliance, strategic, and/or operational objectives of the business. To do this effectively we need to have an understanding of the essential processes that span the enterprise and for those that we work with to understand the value of IA. IA would like to utilize this internship, described below, to develop re-usable data analysis tools/dashboards designed to increase IAs coverage of the audit universe and improve the quality of observations.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Develop and leverage subject matter expertise in the:
- knowledge of AARP’s data environment;
- ability to access and analyze data;
- use of analytical tools; and
- ability to interpret, visualize and communicate results.
- Provide both advisory and execution support in audits by identifying, developing, documenting, or executing audit analytics during all relevant stages of an audit;
- Perform data mining and analysis to facilitate the identification and communication of outliers and trends in the business;
- Design and execute standalone Data Analytics projects as warranted in support of department objectives;
- Assist auditors in obtaining necessary data for audits. Identify, develop and maintain continuous auditing/monitoring activities;
- Actively seek to build and apply business knowledge to complement technical expertise in design and performance of analytical procedures;
- Assist the team with duties or special assignments that contribute to the day-to-day operations and success of internal audit, as assigned;
- Experiment with organizational data and propose ideas for IA/business users to leverage existing data in new, innovative ways;
- Assist the team with ad hoc projects as assigned.
Educational Background:
Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; and be considered graduate students.
Skills/Experience:
- Experience collecting and analyzing complex data, evaluating information and drawing logical conclusions;
- Experience with data access, analysis and visualization tools, such as Excel, Oracle, MS-SQL, Microsoft BI, Tableau, & ACL Analytics;
- Experience accessing and analyzing data in various environments such as Oracle, SQL, Mainframe, etc;
- Ability to consider and apply statistical concepts during analysis of large volumes of business data;
- Ability to extract, define and analyze complex data, and draw relevant conclusions in support of audit objectives;
- Ability to proactively expand knowledge and understanding of technical environments through self-directed research, on-the-job experience, and professional networking;
- Ability to document work performed to enable external re-performance;
- Ability to think critically through recognizing assumptions, evaluating arguments and drawing conclusions;
- Strong analytic skills are essential to success in this internship.
- AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers. This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.
