The Correspondent, National Security identifies and reports stories on the U.S. intelligence community for all NPR News programs. Develops and maintains sources in the intelligence agencies and the Congressional committees which oversee them. Responds to breaking news, initiates and develops short-term news and feature stories and in-depth enterprise and investigative reports. Files news spots for NPR newscasts and reports for Digital Media.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Conceives, proposes, plans and researches ideas around national security issues to produce stories and program segments.
- Develops news sources and keeps associated files.
- Takes assignments from supervisors on the desk.
- Participates in news department and desk planning for coverage.
- Develops material for Web, including original reporting, writing and production.
- Gathers materials on tape and otherwise, through interviews, press conferences and direct coverage of events. This may involve travel on short term notice.
- Prepares and presents special reports, series, documentaries, and program segments examining important subjects in depth.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience:
- At least six years’ experience in journalism.
- Demonstrated expertise at developing a major journalism specialty or beat.
- Experience producing stories on national news issues.
- Willingness to travel, sometimes internationally, for reporting assignments.
- Experience working independently when needed.
- Experience in long-form journalism.
- Excellence in analysis and interpretation.
- Demonstrated experience and success breaking news, developing sources and reporting original, enterprise stories.
- Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
- Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions.
- Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure. Must be able to report breaking stories for both newscasts, major programs and for npr.org
- Proven ability to work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
- Understanding that the correspondent may be reassigned after defined period of time.
- Ability and willingness to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Experience in broadcast journalism.
- Demonstrated experience producing stories on the U.S. intelligence community and the Congressional committees that oversee them.
- Demonstrated expertise in all aspects of broadcast journalism – reporting, voicing, editing, producing full radio pieces, live interviews, use of microphones, recorders, computers and telecommunication transmissions via satellite phones and/or Internet.
- Experience in online journalism.
