Provides efficient and high-quality security support to the AARP enterprise.  Oversees security programs related to office physical security, life safety emergency procedures, travel safety, and others.  Manages security risks and ensures mitigation through assessment, monitoring, and implementation of appropriate strategies

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Oversees all security program governance.
  • Manages executive security needs.
  • Manages and executes security for high-profile internal events.
  • Utilizes protective risk management and intelligence-led risk methodologies to plan and execute protection and security projects and strategies.
  • Executes overall physical security management for the organization’s operational portfolio and develops strategic plans around security technology deployments and program management.
  • Conducts threat, risk, and vulnerability assessments.
  • Determines need for and implements security standards for external events and volunteer security screening.
  • Implements a security program and processes for all state offices.
  • Leads AARP’s response to security incidents and investigations.
  • Coordinates, manages, and administers vendor relations and contractual agreements for protection-related programs, including guard force protection and physical security consultants.
  • Serves as the primary security point-of-contact with respect to AARP’s Workplace Violence (WPV) program.
  • Alerts management in a timely fashion of incidents posing a threat to the organization personnel, property, and/or assets.
  • Engages with other security organizations and professional councils to keep abreast of industry developments.
  • Liaises with local and federal law enforcement and emergency services to gather intel, coordinate services, conduct sensitive investigations, ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, and respond to emergencies.
  • Ensures the adequacy and efficacy of safety and security training programs.
  • Manages and tracks security expenses and budgets.
  • Serves as the safety and security subject-matter-expert for domestic and internal travel
Educational Background: 
Completion of an advanced degree in criminal justice or an associated field preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience managing/developing security programs for corporations, not-for-profit, or other organizations a must.  A current valid passport and driver’s license required.  A Certified Protection Professional (CPP) or equivalent certification required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to communicate with the proper level of detail for the appropriate audiences.
  • Demonstrated track record of creative storytelling, strategic thinking, quality writing, and excellent research and fact-checking.
  • Demonstrated experience in:
    • Developing successful executive communication and translating industry-speak and scientific information into clear and engaging communications across multiple channels for multiple audiences.
    • Writing voice-of-executive content to match appropriate communication channel and audience.
    • Thriving in an extremely fast-paced and changing environment.
    • Identifying trends and providing landscape briefings.
    • Understanding the digital and social media landscape.
    • Handling assignments with rapid turnaround and meeting deadlines while maintaining excellence in quality.
    • Preparing briefing materials for executives for a variety of internal and external speaking engagements.
