Corporate Attorney (Contracts/Marketing Review)

Provides legal support to AARP Services, Inc.’s (ASI) General Counsel and staff.  Provides legal support to staff and senior attorneys in drafting, negotiating, analyzing and maintaining contracts for member benefits. Helps manages and reviews member-facing marketing and other materials provided by service providers for services and products that are available to AARP membership.  Provides legal support and guidance to program managers for products/services, as necessary.  Performs due diligence and other legal research as requested.  Keeps abreast of all relevant legal developments related to transactions, marketing, advertising, insurance, privacy and tax regulations that could impact AARP Services Inc.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Support contract negotiations for new member benefits.
  • Reviews marketing materials for legal clearance.
  • Performs due diligence on potential providers of member benefits.
  • Performs legal research.
  • Strong written and communication skills.
  • Provides support for other attorneys in Office of General Counsel as requested – including research and analyses of transaction issues, and analyses of provisions of current provider contracts.
  • Demonstrate One AARP cultural attributes and behaviors in all interactions.

Complexity:

  • Independent judgment will be exercised when performing due diligence, drafting contract language and quality control review over service providers.  Because of the complexity of the various providers’ products, the position requires flexibility and decisiveness. 
  • Ability to work in a matrix environment.

Impact:

  • Supports the quality control function for programs that produce revenue for AARP -- such revenue is used for the general purposes of AARP and its members.  Helps draft and negotiate language for contracts with service providers.  Helps ensures implementation of marketing and brand guidelines regarding the use of AARP intellectual property and how providers communicate with AARP members and others when using the AARP intellectual property.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Juris Doctorate degree and member in good standing of the D.C. Bar or eligible to become a member, and 3+ years of legal experience.
