Consultancy, Model Legislation for Bycatch Mitigation

In addition to cataloguing and analyzing existing regulations, as well as guidance provided under the U.S. MMPA Import Regulations, the contractor will be expected to consult with a number of recognized experts who will be able to assist with identification of gold standard regulations and additional components to strengthen any proposed regulatory model. They should include, but are not limited to:

  • WWF Out of the Net ACAI and Cetacean Initiative;
  • S. National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) (responsible for implementation of the MMPA):
  • The International Whaling Commission’s (IWC) Bycatch Mitigation Initiative (BMI) and BMI Expert Panel;
  • The United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
  • And the CMS/ACCOBAMS and ASCOBANS Secretariats.
Skills/Experience: 

The following experience and competencies are essential for the role:

  • Background in law, policy, legislative review, etc.
  • Background in fisheries and bycatch.
  • Strong English writing skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to take initiative to find resources and expertise where required.
Compensation/Benefits: 

A maximum of $5,000 USD is available for this phase of the project.
