The Communications Manager is key to SHLB’s growth and success. The work of the Communications Manager falls into three categories: communications, website, and administrative work. This position publicizes SHLB’s work to external audiences both to influence policy-makers and also to attract new members.
The SHLB Coalition is a three-person organization that brings policy recommendations to the Federal Communications Commission, Congress and the Executive branch to promote broadband for anchor institutions. Throughout the year, especially during SHLB’s Annual Conference, extended workday hours will occur. SHLB rents a room in a shared office space in Dupont Circle. A personal laptop computer and personal cell phone is needed for this position.
Communications
- Publicize SHLB activities through e-mail distribution and conference calls.
- Manage social media channels
- Design and format written materials for all projects
Website
- Create original content for SHLB website
- Maintain all webpages including the SHLB Conference website
- Continuously update SHLB policy pages and homepage
- Design new webpages as needed
Webinars
- Develop webinar campaigns
- Prepare speakers and moderators
- Monitor event live and fix any errors
Press Relations
- Write press releases and blog posts for the Executive Director
- Organize press calls
- Foster relationship with press
Annual Conference (October)
- Prepare, edit, and format documents (RFPs, marketing emails, presentations, etc)
- Handle conference speaker logistics
- Assemble event materials and packets
- On-site support for all SHLB events
Administrative
- Open and file the mail
- Schedule phone calls and make travel arrangements
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge and Skills
The policy positions and content can be acquired on the job, but the following knowledge and skills are needed to apply.
- Extensive HTML and CSS skills
- Experience updating and designing websites
- Experience working in Adobe Illustrator
- Familiarity with membership databases, such as YourMembership desired
Familiarity with the broadband industry and technology is preferable. One to three years’ work experience is also preferred.
Abilities
SHLB is looking for a go-getter who is enthusiastic about his or her job, is comfortable working in a small office while interacting with members all across the U.S. A positive attitude is extremely important. The ideal candidate will bring an entrepreneurial attitude to a non-profit, public interest organization. The skills will require both a willingness to take on challenges and develop new approaches while also working for others. Other important abilities include:
- Excellent judgment, poise and professionalism; able to represent the SHLB Coalition to key stakeholders, SHLB Board members and the public.
- Ability to re-prioritize tasks and support organizations needs based on changing needs.
- Ability to work with a small staff and in a flexible working environment.
- Enjoys bringing a high-level of detail to all tasks and plans.
The salary for this position is between $35,000 to $45,000 based on experience. SHLB offers 10 days of paid vacation for first year employees. All full time employees are eligible for SHLB’s health insurance, dental and vision insurance, and matching retirement plan. Year-end bonuses are possible but not guaranteed and depend on performance
