The National Geographic Society is seeking a Collections Assistant to be responsible for handling rare or archival materials in the scanning environment, for keeping materials in order, as well as keeping them clean and safe. Will help perform workflows for scanning projects and the conversion of archival information from primary source materials into digital objects and metadata in the library and archives digital asset management system. Assist with general inventory review, organizing of collections, and relocation of assets to appropriate storage areas.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Assist with general inventory review, organizing of collections, and pulling or re-filing of assets to appropriate storage areas, which may include preparing for shipment off-site. Carry materials from stacks and collections areas to scanning environment, and with supervision, return or refile materials as required. (50%)
- Conduct inventories of the collection; may aid in arranging, organizing, or re-housing collection items to facilitate care and management. May assist in reviewing and evaluating digitized content. Assist in or support a variety of collection management tasks and roles. (50%)
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree in history, library, or archival studies preferred.
Skills/Experience:
- At least one year previous experience in an archival/film preservation setting. Experience may be combined with education.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Background, familiarity with photography, graphic arts, media production, rare books and maps.
- Experience handling different formats of archives and special collections materials, including documents, photographs, maps, negatives, slides, film, audio/video tapes.
- Familiarity in the use of digitization technologies, including digital cameras; flatbed, film and feed scanners; OCR, and image editing software; file formats and standards. Familiarity with audio and video digitization and conversion.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate with technical and non-technical individuals.
- Maintains complete discretion, confidentiality, sensitivity and professional judgment.
- Works effectively in a fast-paced work environment and demonstrates excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize work and complete assignments independently as well as in a team environment.
- Proficient in use of cross-platform computer programs; demonstrates knowledge in the innovative use of information technologies in support of primary duties.
- Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds.
