Context: The Chapter Coordinator handles the daily administrative operations of the Chapter office.
The Chapter Coordinator implements Chapter programs, campaigns, events, advocacy and outreach initiatives set by the Executive Committee. S/he builds grassroots power by working to increase the number of people involved, leaders trained, and engagement of people with influence to achieve Chapter conservation goals.
Scope: The Chapter Coordinator works under the direction of the Chapter Chair. Responsible for ensuring that Chapter activities are organized and implemented. Works closely with volunteer leaders on conservation campaigns and initiatives. Identifies and develops volunteers to take on leadership roles and build grassroots power and networks.
The Chapter Coordinator is responsible for providing office management and administrative functions.
- Implements Chapter initiatives at the direction of the ExCom and in accordance with Chapter policies.
- Assists Chapter Chair and volunteer leaders in coordinating meetings and preparing agendas.
- Identifies, recruits and organizes volunteers to achieve chapter's conservation priorities. Works with chapter leaders to plan outreach to members. Supports and enables Chapter effectiveness.
- Coordinates and facilitates volunteer involvement in the Chapter’s conservation and advocacy initiatives. Organizes and supports volunteer participation in government hearings, meetings, forums, advocacy, and other events to ensure the Club’s grassroots power is displayed to decision makers.
- Supports Chapter advocacy programs and campaigns at the direction of the Executive Committee, including meeting with elected officials, coalitions, partners, and through participation in government hearings, meetings, forums, advocacy, and other events.
- Implements the Chapter’s social media and outreach initiatives.
- Tracks and processes incoming donations. Manages donor/member database. Coordinates production of annual fundraising letters, assists with the individual giving program, and preparing materials and responses. Monitors opportunities for Sierra Club grants and funding opportunities from outside groups.
- Attends meetings in the community on related issues and maintains communications and relationships with other organizations.
- Oversees office operations, which include purchasing and maintaining office supplies and equipment and ensuring office space is functional and usable for volunteers and for Chapter events. Maintains service contracts, inventory of equipment and materials. Develops and implements office procedures.
- Coordinates efforts with national Sierra Club staff and ensures that Chapter conservation initiatives are in compliance with national requirements.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- 2-3 years experience in the environmental field that includes research and organizing campaigns, public advocacy, press relations and public speaking preferred.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Sharp attention to detail, especially in tracking deadlines, writing and organizing events.
- Excellent social media skills and computer skills.
- Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with a diverse group of volunteers.
- Ability to attend every monthly Chapter ExCom meeting in the evenings and attend other Chapter events in the evenings and on weekends.
- Ability to travel as needed.
