Financial and Operational Services (FOS) manages AARP's multi-year financial planning, budgeting and forecasting; treasury and investments; tax reporting and planning; and accounting and financial reporting activities. The division provides project management and training and support for the systems used to manage AARP’s money and assets. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serves as the divisional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to the following business groups: Information Technology, Policy Strategy & International Affairs, Enterprise Strategy, and Enterprise Innovation.
  • Delivers high value integrated solutions, including budgeting, forecasting, monthly close, financial reporting, benchmarking, business case development, and operational analysis.
  • Provides strategic financial and operational consulting and technical guidance to Executive Leadership.
  • Provides regular guidance on day-to-day work activities for staff and coordinates the work efforts across functional areas to provide the full range of financial support for the business group.
  • Based on leading edge financial practices and sound customer insights, leads the team to develop high value business partnerships and deliver financial solutions that significantly impact business results.
  • Ensures effective utilization of policies, protocols, tools, and systems in meeting AARP’s strategic, financial, and operational needs.  Defines and translates client needs for financial services and support into management and planning tools, protocols, and solutions.
  • Matrix manages a cross-functional business group service team to develop business group budgets, forecasts, accounting services, variance and trend analysis, and management reporting.
  • Works with AARP senior leadership to provide strategic financial counsel and advisory services.
  • Serves as a highly trusted and knowledgeable senior-level financial business partner.  Discerns business group needs and translates into necessary financial services, reports, tools and processes.
  • Directs the development of financial planning and analyses, modeling, and forecasts based on business group needs, operational trends, and economic indicators.  Prepares and presents recommended actions.
  • Monitors and reports on key business group performance and operational metrics to identify financial and business trends that drive business group management decisions and operational planning.
  • Serves as the senior financial resource to the business group and anticipates, investigates, and resolves day-to-day financial issues.
  • Develops, negotiates, and monitors business group service level agreements based on client requirements and financial services capabilities.  Informs and influences service delivery based on feedback and evolving business group requirements.
  • Leads, manages, and develops financial staff to achieve a consistently high level of performance.  Provides guidance, feedback, coaching, and training, as necessary. 
  • Participates in cross-enterprise initiatives that require senior financial support (e.g. Business Platform Assessment, Service Center Assessment, HQ Renovation, Workforce of the Future, Enterprise Resource Planning).
  • This is a highly challenging, complex role requiring advanced analytic skills coupled with an ability to effectively inform, communicate and negotiate with all levels across the entire Association while meeting time sensitive, financial objectives.  Involves frequent, new, and varied work situations involving a high degree of complexity.  It requires a high degree of independent judgment as there are financial and organizational challenges which develop on a daily basis often requiring decisive, objective action.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with and influence key business leaders at all levels.
  • Ability to write and speak clearly and effectively to various audiences, including the ability to communicate complex financial information to non-financial constituencies.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for efficiencies, new services, and support.
  • Ability to champion and educate the Association on AARP’s strategic and financial plan/direction.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline (advanced degree in Finance, MBA and/or CPA highly preferred),
Skills/Experience: 
  • Position requires technical Accounting knowledge (GAAP), background in Consolidation Accounting in addition to a core competency in traditional Financial Planning & Analysis and systems. 
  • Demonstrated leadership and strategic financial contributions in complex business settings.  Experience working with executive and senior management to develop and implement successful strategic financial solutions.
  • 10+ years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.  Requires extensive experience in Corporate Accounting, Financial Planning, financial management, project planning, budgeting, capital budgeting, forecasting, business analysis and modeling.  Experience managing, developing, and mentoring teams of Accounting & Finance professionals.  Excellent oral, written, influence, and interpersonal skills required.
  • Technical competencies include Financial Planning software tools such Hyperion, Essbase, and PeopleSoft.  Must be an advanced user with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Excel and PowerPoint.  Hyperion experience highly preferred.
  • Excellent written, verbal, visual/presentation and interpersonal communications skills.  Adept at conveying complex financial concepts and analyses to a variety of audiences.
