NPR’s flagship morning news program is looking for an Associate Producer to join its team. The Associate Producer is a strong, mid-level journalist who has proven experience in both breaking news production and thoughtful storytelling. This person works closely with Morning Edition’s hosts, managers and editors to shape the daily show and Up First podcast. The Associate Producer’s duties include pitching stories, cutting host interviews, mixing pieces, producing the Up First podcast and field producing host trips. This position requires a mix of skills including the ability to script for broadcast. The Associate Producer must be available to rotate into a variety of shifts including overnight, swing and day side. He/she works under the direct supervision of the Morning Edition leadership team.
- Responds to breaking news, quickly turning soundbites for air, assisting with scripting and establishing live connections with remote guests.
- Plans and produces program material for the show/podcast under supervision.
- Skillfully gathers and edits tape with a keen ear for audio quality and strong storytelling.
- Consistently generates timely and well thought-out interview ideas, assists in the booking process and briefs hosts to Morning Edition standards.
- Works in the field with reporters, editors and hosts. Produces live host remotes.
- Directs the on-air production of NPR programs, both regularly scheduled and special reports.
- Rotates through a variety of shifts, as assigned (including overnight, updates, swing and the podcast.)
- May be given assignments on different platforms, including writing Web text.
- Maintains internal relationship with program staff, Digital Media staff, reporters/editors contributing to daily program and morning news podcast, as well as departments providing support services.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- At least three years of radio production experience including experience on broadcast digital audio workstations (ie MTE/DAVID, Dalet, Cool Edit, ProTools or similar)
- At least two years of experience in live broadcasting
- At least one year of experience in editorial decision-making.
- Demonstrated excellence in news writing and copy-editing, especially on deadline.
- Understanding of journalistic ethics.
- Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
- Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
- Demonstrated ability to assimilate and organize large amounts of information.
- Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
- Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
