Context: The Sierra Club’s Resist campaign is a new campaign that coordinates and manages our national federal defense work across the organization and ensures that, win or lose, the Sierra Club and our movement grows stronger. The Resist Campaign serves as a strategic clearinghouse and allows key stakeholders from across the organization to come together quickly and draft coordinated plans to fight back against attacks on people and the planet and, in doing so, build power for the next fight. The Resist Campaign coordinates work across Federal Policy, Organizing Department, Digital Strategies, Communications, the Environmental Law Program and Sierra Club campaigns. The campaign is also developing a distributed organizing model that can engage the Sierra Club’s three million members and supporters in national federal defense work.

Scope:  The Associate Director oversees the implementation of the Sierra Club’s Resistance campaign and provides experienced operational leadership to campaign staff and volunteers. Manages and monitors expenses, assigns priorities, develops work plans in collaboration with stakeholders such as the campaign delivery team, Communications, Organizing, Law Program, Federal Policy, Chapters and Digital Strategies. Evaluates the success of the campaign using tools such Salesforce and VAN. Evaluates changing conditions and modifies plans accordingly. Acts as a trusted advisor to staff colleagues and volunteers.  Develops and advances special projects as assigned by the Director.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • In collaboration with stakeholders from across the organization, develop and implement a distributed organizing strategy for the Resist Campaign.
  • Ensures full and effective coordination of all Resist campaign work across the Sierra Club’s departments and campaigns, including Organizing, Partnerships, Communications, Digital Strategies, Sierra Student Coalition, volunteer activist networks, chapters and volunteers.
  • Develop and manage campaign metrics and tracking systems to track progress and learnings from across the campaign.
  • Support the Resist Campaign in advancing the Sierra Club's equity, inclusion, and justice goals to support frontline community efforts. 
  • Supports and provides senior level professional expertise to chapter staff and volunteers leading local work in support of the Sierra Club’s Resist Campaign.
  • Develops and manages campaign documents and tools, including campaign plans and tracking tools, organizing toolkits, case studies, fact sheets and training materials. Develop Resist campaign content for internal stakeholders, funders and supporters.
  • Represent the Resist campaign to donors, the media and partners.
  • Represent the Sierra Club’s Resist Campaign to strategic partners and coalitions, as assigned. Develops shared objectives and plans with partner organizations.
  • Supports and assists the Director in leading the campaign’s internal communications plan, informing and engaging Club staff, boards and volunteers.
  • Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration.
  • Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Nonprofit management, Political Science, or a closely related field, or comparable experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5 plus years' experience in a comparable position which includes substantial experience related to: leading effective teams, campaign strategy, digital organizing, grassroots training, distributed organizing, field organizing, media, working with volunteers, budget planning, and staff management.
  • Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated public speaking, donor cultivation, and media presentation ability.
  • Substantial experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers and in highly collaborative environments.
  • Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
