The Associate Director of Development (AD) will serve as a deputy to the Director of Development (DD), reporting to the DD and working directly with NCJW’s CEO, members of the Board of Directors, and senior staff. The AD will play a major role in the organization’s efforts to cultivate and solicit major and planned gifts, direct and supervise the development services and database management areas, and provide mentorship to other members of the development team.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive, integrated program for the cultivation and solicitation of major and planned gifts for the 125th Anniversary including managing the engagement of volunteers and staff, articulate a compelling case for support, and create meaningful opportunities for donors to invest in NCJW’s mission and programs;
- In partnership with the DD, set and achieve goals for annual support; establish and report on benchmarks to track progress; directly support Board-level committees devoted to all gifts;
- Personally manage a portfolio of individual prospects and donors capable of gifts of $5,000+; coordinate, support and promote active roles by the CEO, DD, Board members, and others in development efforts;
- Manage NCJW’s donor circles and other benefit structures to promote renewed gifts and foster optimal donor relations;
- Assist in the cultivation of institutional support, for example by fostering connections to high-level foundation trustees;
- Lead efforts to optimize and leverage NCJW’s marketing and communications broadly and strategically to promote the case for support; engage prospective donors; steward existing donors; utilize technology to enhance giving; and follow and introduce industry best practices;
- Lead efforts to create fundraising communications, collateral and sponsorship materials; suggest, initiate and supervise the creation of materials in partnership with the Marketing and Communications area;
- Direct and supervise database and development services staff and functions, leading efforts to streamline and enhance data management, information retention, and gift acknowledgment processes; oversee day to day operations of Development department;
- Mentor members of the development team with a particular focus on strategies to identify and progressively engage individual donors capable of planned or major gifts;
- Assist in promoting a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.
- Genuine passion for and understanding of the mission of NCJW;
- At least 3-5 years of progressively responsible development experience, including significant experience designing and implementing an integrated major gift or individual giving program, preferably at a major national advocacy organization;
- Proven track record in fostering relationships with high-net-worth individuals, managing an active portfolio of donors and prospects, and personally implementing sophisticated, multi-year cultivation strategies that lead to solicitation and securing of major and planned gifts;
- Superior oral and written communications skills, including the ability to write in compelling language about NCJW’s work and to develop key donor collateral and related materials;
- Sound judgment and ability to exercise discretion when dealing with confidential or sensitive information; high degree of self-motivation, personal discipline and integrity;
- Ability to leverage volunteers and senior staff to achieve fundraising success;
- Experience recruiting, training, and managing high-performing staff;
- Working knowledge of planned gift opportunities and benefits;
- Working knowledge of grant writing;
- Working knowledge and ability to supervise design and production of digital or print materials;
- Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge (or similar database) and prospect research tools; understanding of best practices for strategic data management, information retention, and tax acknowledgment;
- Outstanding time management and organizational skills, with careful attention to detail;
- Demonstrated ability to negotiate a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment and to perform well independently as well as part of a team;
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred;
- Ability and willingness to travel; ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule as needed.
