The Advisor, Field Manager builds and shares on-the-ground political intelligence within a group of individual states and state offices that helps to educate and motivate staff, volunteer leaders and members about AARP priority issues, campaign tactics and key messages. The Advisor has a depth of understanding about state priorities and political landscapes that inform campaign decisions and strategies.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Supports campaign management by building and sharing a deep understanding of the landscape in a group individual states and state offices including state priorities and political landscape.
- Supports state offices delivering on strategies and tactics that they are accountable for in approved campaign plans.
- Works with campaign support functions to ensure that state offices are adequately resourced to implement campaign strategies and tactics.
- Works directly with state staff to support on-going campaign work as well as needed rapid response.
- Supports capacity building activity in individual states, working with state staff to shore up gaps in campaign capacity (e.g., key contacts, volunteer district teams, lobbying capacity, opposition research work, message training).
- Supports state offices in the recruitment, cultivation, development and training of key contacts.
- Works with state staff to track and improve the strength of congressional relations in individual states and congressional districts.
- Ensures that on-the-ground political intelligence is captured and shared appropriately.
- Provides support to state staff, offering best practices in electoral and advocacy activities, event management, and message delivery.
- Educates and motivates staff, volunteer leaders, and members regarding AARP priority issues, campaign tactics, and key messages.
- Demonstrates ‘One AARP’ behaviors and attributes in all interactions.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree in political science, government or other fields directly related to the duties of this position;
Skills/Experience:
- 8+ years of experience in lobbying, political intelligence gathering, communications and/or public relations, or project management, preferably for a non-profit organization.
- Strong, effective interpersonal and communications skills required; ability to work collaboratively and confidentially and to multi-task within a fast-paced organization.
- Demonstrated adaptability to rapidly changing situations, flexibility, and ability to deal with difficult people. Ability to build consensus and to motivate people.
