This position will lead the development and execution of SCE Strategic Communications work on behalf of the SVP, in collaboration with the SCE Leadership Team.  The Advisor will work collaboratively with SCE department leaders, the Senior Advisor for Digital and Social Media, the SCE Project Manager for Communications, as well as CSN and enterprise partners to lead the development and execution of a highly integrated communications strategy that effectively tells the story of state and local contributions to enterprise achievements.  

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive internal communications strategy for SCE on behalf of Senior Vice President (SVP) and AARP State & Community Engagement that clearly communicates the vision and strategy for AARP’s work in states and local communities. Coordinates across all parts of SCE to shape the narrative and communications strategy. 
  • Develops and executes strategic communications plans to support a variety of State and Community Engagement leadership projects, including strategies that tell the story of state and local contributions to enterprise achievements.
  • Coordinates regular communications from SVP to State & Community Engagement (SCE) and to Board and executive audiences, external audiences, and other communications as needed.  Proficiency at using multiple channels and a variety of communication modes (e.g., talking points, presentations, speeches, memos, newsletters) required.  Ensures that all communications from SVP or SCE Leadership Team reflect Association, CSN and SCE goals and priorities, are well-organized, encourage ideas, and achieve buy-in.  Provides coaching and consultation to other SCE teams on how to successfully communicate and works with them to ensure a strong and consistent narrative.
  • Supports the SVP, SCE in providing information to EVP, SCE Leadership Team, and Community, State & National Affairs (CSN) Leadership Team. May negotiate at all levels of management to secure input from an array of diverse units to achieve particular social impact goals.
  • Coordinates a wide range of information on priority initiatives and works with colleagues across AARP to ensure that information is communicated in a way that effectively and efficiently drives action and follow up as appropriate
  • Collaborates with the Director, Senior Advisor for Social Media and enterprise colleagues to provide on-going support for state external communications efforts including access to information, tools/systems and training to better tell the story of AARP in states and communities.  
  • Coordinates SVP external events and activities, and visits to state offices. Develops overarching strategies and plans to maximize the impact of these visits.  Ensures appropriate briefing materials are developed for visits, coordinating closely with State Office and SVP Executive Assistant.
  • Mines data and reporting to identify trends and story lines. Is an expert user of key resources and tools (e.g., written and electronic communiques, webinars) to share information across audiences.
  • Exhibits AARP values in all interactions.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, media relations or other field directly related to the duties of the position;
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in strategic communications planning, preferably in a matrix organization.
  • Experience in an advisory and/or consulting capacity to senior level management related to the duties of the position.
  • Strong writing skills and the proven ability to tell a cohesive story through visual elements and communicate effectively and persuasively.
  • Proven aptitude to collect, analyze and evaluate information and to adjust strategies and tactics in a fast paced environment.  Must be able to quickly understand and interpret strategic issues and direction.  Ability to adapt quickly to change and demonstrate flexibility with new ideas.
