The Supervising Producer, Education will help launch National Geographic Society’s educational video effort, and manage the project into the future. She or he will oversee the creation of both original and repurposed videos across all phases of production including research, writing, shooting, production, video editing, motion graphics and music composition. The Supervising Producer manages a team of producers and editors, and collaborates with the NGS Education Department to ensure that all videos meet the requirements of the larger NGS Education Initiative. She or he maintains a long-term production schedule to coordinate multiple production workflows. The Supervising Producer reports directly to the Director of Impact Video.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Project Management: Manage multiple production workflows, including original production, reversions, and content partnerships. Maintain a long-term production schedule and budget so that all videos deliver on time and on budget. Ensure all deliverables (media, contracts, releases and other paperwork) are properly executed, delivered and archived. . (25%)
  • Development: Develop and pilot formats for educational videos, and lead the testing of these videos in designated target audience groups. Gather data that describes the effectiveness of a variety of video styles and make recommendations for new approaches in response to the data. (25%)
  • Producing: Manage both external vendors and internal NGS production partners through all aspects of production, including scheduling, budgeting, script and video reviews. Guide internal stakeholders through the entire production process, ensuring that all videos meet their requirements, as well as production standards of NGS Video.    (25%)Staff
  • Management: Occasionally manage freelance researchers, producers, and editors contributing to the larger project. Mentors less experienced members of the team. (10%)
  • Partnerships: Solicit and manage strategic partnerships with like-minded organizations who can collaborate on producing, funding, and sharing content. (15%)
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in television and film production
Skills/Experience: 

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

  • 10 years experience writing and producing educational video content. Proven success communicating difficult scientific concepts to a lay audience, particularly teachers and students. At least 3 years of experience overseeing the work of external vendors.

Knowledge and Skill Required

  • The successful candidate will have a proven record of ambitious, creative, innovative visual storytelling, particularly to communicate science, culture, and geography to educators and students. She or he will possess professional management abilities as well as proven success leading the operations of educational media production. Must be able to work well as a part of a team, as well as independently. Must have the ability to prioritize workflows and strong attention to detail. Excellent written, verbal, communication. Collaboration and interpersonal skills are required. The successful candidate should have experience creating new video production workflows and be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.  Experience in at least one production skill (shooting, editing, writing) is required.
