World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a Senior Specialist in Seaweed and Marine Algae at our Washington, DC office. The Senior Specialist will provide thought leadership and finance expertise on how marine seaweed and algal species can be utilized to reduce GHG emissions and sequester carbon while providing critical food and food ingredients that reduce key environmental impacts. The Senior Specialist will have practical experience in the production of marine seaweed and algae as well as innovation and finance.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Provide thought leadership to identify trends in marine algae aquaculture to sequester carbon;
- Undertake an inventory of global seaweed and algal production;
- Assess which systems, individuals, organizations and strategies have the potential to scale;
- Identify which countries are working on “blue carbon”, what strategies (conventional and innovative) they are pursuing and what success they have achieved to date;
- Build on an existing Network of key individuals and institutions working on marine seaweed and algal cutting edge research, production and businesses;
- Prioritize those production systems that have the greatest potential to reduce GHG emissions and identify what factors are reducing their ability to scale.
- Create a platform to share knowledge about knowledge, systems, successes and failures so that the field can learn faster;
- Generate business cases and value propositions for innovative financing of marine algae production that will reduce GHG’s emissions;
- Identify financial approaches for supporting innovation with the most potential to scale and sequester GHG emissions;
- Determine the efficacy of marine algae to reduce enteric methane emissions, e.g. as an ingredient in dairy and beef cattle feeds;
- Identify or support the development of carbon footprint methodologies of seaweed and algal production;
- Provide technical support as needed to the WWF network and other interested entities on seaweed and algae production;
- Engage and communicate globally on marine seaweed and algae production.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s Degree in aquaculture and/or business and 6+ years of relevant experience, or a Masters Degree and 3+ years of relevant experience required.
Skills/Experience:
- Relevant experience to include aquaculture production (international preferred), finance and business development.
- Experience in working with a global network of aquaculture experts and ability to connect and collaborate with them is required.
- Fluency in English required. Additional language skills are preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are required, including effective public speaking and the ability to communicate complex issues both verbally and in written form.
- Ability to translate concepts and ideas into practical and tangible tools.
- Excellent strategic abilities, with the capacity to articulate programmatic needs and translate them into effective initiatives
- Ability to effectively prioritize and produce high-quality work under time constraints is a must.
- Proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively on a team.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
- National and international travel required (up to 30%).
