NPR has built a distinctive voice on social media that conveys the news judgment, curiosity and cultural observation that NPR is known for. The Senior Social Media Editor will develop and implement NPR’s social media strategy across all platforms and oversee its effectiveness. This position will lead the NPR newsroom in addition to NPR’s social approach in developing online communities on podcasts, Music, with hosts and other journalists and brands. We’re looking for someone with years of demonstrated experience in growing and engaging audiences on social media who can take NPR’s social presence to the next level. This role involves managing relationships with social media companies, setting measurable goals and monitoring the growth, engagement and effectiveness across NPR-branded social channels. This person must be able to communicate effectively with senior managers and high-profile journalists. Enthusiasm and a clear vision for NPR’s social media future is a must.
- Functions as NPR’s social media editorial leader, overseeing the larger NPR strategy to grow and engage its online audiences in the most effective manner, ranging from its largest channels to its niche spaces.
- Works closely with the various departments across NPR including Digital Media, Marketing and Communication to coordinate social media approach.
- Develops clear social media strategy for NPR’s biggest shows, including “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered,” as well as weekend shows.
- Develops clear social media strategy for NPR podcasts.
- Leads NPR’s team of social media account managers to guide strategy, experimentation and social media company partnerships. Advises NPR on editorial approach and identifies opportunities with social media companies.
- Works closely with NPR newsroom’s Engagement and Visuals teams who manage the day-to-day presence of NPR’s main social channels.
- Works closely with NPR Ethics and Standards editor to advise on NPR’s social media policy for journalists and raises ethical issues.
- Works with NPR Training Team to identify areas of training to share with NPR member stations.
- Identifies issues in news and social media to discuss and share on NPR’s social media blog, Curios. Co-manages the blog and edits its content.
- Uses sound editorial judgment and an understanding of NPR’s journalism and storytelling to determine brand-appropriate approach to NPR’s social channels.
- Analyzes metrics, including Chartbeat and Google Analytics, to understand and better serve the digital audience.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- At least eight years of experience in daily journalism (digital, print and/or broadcast).
- At least three years of experience in editorial decision-making.
- At least two years of experience managing relationships with social media companies (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.)
- Demonstrated experience in operating and growing social media presence for a major news brand.
- Familiarity with NPR’s news judgment, storytelling approach, news magazines and podcasts. Strong understanding of what makes the NPR “voice” unique on social compared with other news media.
- Solid, independent news judgment. Strong familiarity with the mission of public media.
- Understanding of journalistic ethics. Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
- Experience with intellectual property issues involved in publications generally and Web publications in particular.
- Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent time frames and changing priorities/conditions.
- Ability to work independently and with members of a cooperative team.
- Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
- Ability and willingness to travel and represent NPR in public forums and events.
- Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the SAG-AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
