Develop and implement the design and maintenance of online courses and other digital learning experiences to serve the needs of the Education division, other National Geographic divisions, and outside funders/partners. Courses vary and may include professional development programs, certification modules, instructor led experiences, and content or pedagogy education courses that align with National Geographic strategic initiatives.
- Program management: Manage, monitor, and control all aspects of each assigned digital learning product, course, or program from inception to completion including: project timeline and deadlines, budget, program and/or materials development. Determine goals for project(s) or program(s) and align spending to those goals. Make decisions about budget priorities and allocations. Hire and manage contract staff, including writers, researchers, expert reviewers, editors, photo researchers, video producers, and technical support staff. (35%)
- Asset creation: Design, develop/write, review and edit high-quality online courses, modules, e-learning content, instructional materials, and instructor-led training materials on a variety of topics for multiple audiences. Deliver on-deadline, well-written, well-researched content that is optimized for media format and audience, and adheres to the project style guide. Oversee publication of instructional design materials on an LMS(35%)
- Program Strategy: Implement strategic plans for the digital learning team, determining content development needs, needs assessment, and gap analysis. Use findings and client needs to develop program proposals. (10%)
- Marketing Communications and Partnerships: Represent NG Education at meetings with partners/funders/explorers and make program decisions. Develop and maintain contacts with other NGS divisions, NG Partners divisions, and outside funders/entities. (10%)
- Team, Divisional, and Organizational Collaboration: Work across NGS divisions to maximize program impact and reach. Participate in cross-divisional and cross-platform meetings, strategic planning instances, and maintain communication with other Program Managers. Be an active member of the Education digital learning team, serving as a resource, contributing ideas, and guiding and reviewing the work of colleagues. (10%)
Minimum education required
- 3+ years in professional development design and management, adult learning, online learning or related field preferred.
- Content knowledge in Social Studies, History, Geography, Environmental Science, Earth Science, or English Language Arts a plus.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
- 8+ years of related experience in any of the following:
- Educational writing and editing--preferably in print or web-based publishing or multimedia development.
- Related project or program management experience
- Experience in Grades 6-12 education--emphasis on classroom teaching/curriculum design and professional development
- Proven work experience in instructional design for online learning environments.
- 4+ years experience working with one or more Learning Management System (LMS) as a content creator and as a facilitator.
- Knowledge of aspects of Web 2.0, including communities, user-generated content, public data and asset sharing a plus.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills and ability to work with individuals and groups at all levels. Ability to work on multiple projects, under deadlines, with changing priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced, environment.
- Familiarity with content and learning management systems, database design and management, web analytics tools and project management tools. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage instructional design projects.
- Proficiency in Office Suite and HTML, experience with Adobe Creative Suites and Flash desirable. Visual design skills (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator) and ability to storyboard a plus.
- Excellent knowledge of adult learning theories and instructional design models and/or for teacher professional development skills a plus.
