Provides oversight on all aspects of AARP’s retirement plans, including developing strategies, managing ongoing plan operations and vendor relationships, to ensure high levels of performance, cost-effectiveness, and customer satisfaction.  Ensures the plans are administered in accordance with policies and procedures as established by DOL, IRS and AARP.  Develops specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work and keeps up-to-date on technical and legal changes related to the retirement plans.  Also provides oversight of AARP's financial wellness programs, including developing strategies, leading a team focused on financial wellness initiatives, and managing ongoing vendor relationships.  Ensures financial wellness programs are tailored specifically to the needs of AARP's employees by understanding their financial stress points and developing targeted programs that have high likelihood of success in terms of employee value and improvements in outcomes, thereby increasing productivity of AARP's workforce.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provides consultation/advice to all levels of management and staff enterprise wide regarding retirement programs (Defined Contribution, Defined Benefit & Retiree Health) and financial wellness programs.
  • Manages recordkeeping and custodian vendors to provide high quality programs and ensure benefit plans are administered according to plan guidelines. 
  • Manage all aspects of projects including requests for information (RFP) and implementation, for plan administration changes and improvements.
  • Manage various internal and external parties during internal and IRS audits.  Ensure the correct information is made available in a timely fashion for review prior to the audit and during the audit.
  • Evaluates opportunities to improve policies, procedures and programs. 
  • Collaborates with senior leaders to develop and implement retirement plan and financial wellness strategies to meet business needs.
  • Coordinates and implements variety of retirement plan and financial wellness initiatives.
  • Evaluate the plans’ administrative procedures and identify reengineering opportunities to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Ensure that the plans are administered in accordance with IRS and DOL regulations and each specific plan document, as well as adherence to the complex fiduciary rules.
  • Maintain up-to-date plan documents, SPDs, SBCs, SARs and SMMs including all participant communications materials.
  • Resolve issues that cannot be resolved by the plans’ record keepers.
  • Understand market practices, how they are changing and opportunities for our plans that align with AARP Public Policy.
  • Ensure the integrity of AARP’s general ledger records as they relate to the retirement plans’ liability.
  • Serves as technical expert on payroll and reporting issues for the retirement plans.
  • Provides administrative updates, plan summaries and employee benefit appeals during Benefits Committee and Investment Committee meetings.
  • Responsible for other benefit programs as needed
Educational Background: 
4-year degree from an accredited university
Skills/Experience: 
  • 8+ years’ Defined Contribution and Defined Benefits recordkeeping experience preferred
  • 6+ years’ experience in benefits plan administration a plus 
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving skills and critical thinking skills
  • Project management and communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
  • Working knowledge of PeopleSoft a plus
  • Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) preferred
