Project Manager, Conservation Strategies

Reporting to the Chief Conservation Officer/Senior Advisor to the CEO and supporting the Vice President for Conservation Policy, the Project Manager for Conservation Strategies will play a key role in implementing the conservation priorities of the National Audubon Society.  S/he will work directly with Audubon’s strategy leaders and others to align and integrate policy, science, conservation and flyway initiatives within and across strategies. This individual effectively project manages tasks, aligns resources and budgets for strategies, tracks strategy implementation with leadership, and clearly communicates progress toward organizational priorities to ensure that short and long-term milestones are met. The individual also will be responsible for preparing reports and materials for the National Audubon Society’s Board of Directors.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Build solid relationships, ensure there are strong communications and information sharing throughout the organization to successfully implement conservation strategies with various interdisciplinary teams and divisions and help hold individuals accountable for their roles in execution.
  • Work with the Chief Conservation Officer and the Vice President for Conservation Policy to review, coordinate and ensure follow through on conservation projects for which the conservation team is responsible. 
  • Evaluate information flow and conduct review meetings to keep conservation strategies on track; troubleshoot to resolve issues and keep projects moving forward and on time.
  • As directed by the CCO and the Vice President of Conservation Policy, communicate priorities and results to Audubon staff, centers, potential and existing supporters, and conservation groups.  
  • Support the Chief Scientist in establishing metrics for each conservation strategy to measure successful outcomes and to provide support to conservation strategy leaders in reporting on progress on a quarterly basis.
  • Lead and execute discrete projects assigned by the Chief Conservation Officer.  These projects will generally cut across divisions and geographies and require working with leaders and staff throughout the organization.
  • Ensure the priorities of the Chief Conservation Officer are acted upon and ensure that there is strong communications and information sharing with other Audubon divisions; independently identify and address issues as they arise and bring them to the President’s attention for input or resolution as needed.
  • Regularly review metrics and strategies with CCO and Vice President for Conservation Policy to refine approaches, share successes and problem solve, when necessary.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Bachelor’s degree and 4-5 years’ project management experience focused on execution and implementation of strategic plans and project management of them, preferably within the not-for-profit sector, required. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully support the delivery of complex business plans that detail strategic needs, goals, budget estimates, deadlines, resource requirements and ROI. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred, but not required.
  • Highly organized, with the capability of moving multiple tasks toward successful completion and diplomatically handling competing interests.
  • Critical communication skills to convey scope, schedule, budget, and any changes to key stakeholders and affected parties.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills a must, as well as experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Project and Visio.
  • High degree of personal initiative and ability to work effectively within inter- and intra-departmental teams.
  • Demonstrated interest in and appreciation of the programs, mission, and ethos of the National Audubon Society.
  • Experience working in a large, complex organization, or with multiple stakeholders, as well as a background in the environmental/conservation industry.
