Reporting to the Senior Director of Exploration Technology, the Product Manager is responsible for the product roadmap and product lifecycle management for products created within the National Geographic Society. S/he will be responsible for scaling systems developed within the department and will oversee the timetable, communication, and distribution of this hardware and software. The product manager will work in close collaboration with the Senior Director and advise on product strategy. These products are ultimately being created for their role in documenting, communicating, and preserving, the importance of cultural and biological diversity globally.

- Supervise and build the product roadmap for National Geographic’s exploration technology products. Ensure timely and reliable delivery of products for deployment, to include overseeing product manufacturing and distribution. (35%)
- Work with National Geographic’s explorer community and partner organizations to identify potential engineering needs. Identify solutions through the deployment of existing products or in the development of new products. (20%)
- Research, identify, and secure relationships with like-minded organizations for additional testing and deployment of Exploration Technology products. (20%)
- Manage existing product distribution and support, to include the creation of training materials, technical support, and managing current and future product inventory. (10%)
- Ensure that all scaled engineering products and their associated design documentation, and data is captured within internal archiving and database systems. (10%)
Minimum Years and Types of Experience
- 6 or more years of experience in product management or technical product management and at least 3+ year of management experience required. Must be comfortable working in parallel with engineering. A strong candidate will ideally have technical development experience.

- Candidate should be team oriented, but confident in the value of his or her own ideas, contribution, and role, and be able to exercise independent judgment. Strong interpersonal skills to deal positively and productively with a wide range of personalities are required. Must not be afraid to apply a hands-on approach when needed. Superior organization skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks under the pressure of tight deadlines. Good written communications skills. Experience with standard product/project management tools/methods (Google Docs, Trello, Kanban theory).

- 1-2 Staff members, contractors, and interns.
