NPR’s award-winning Washington Desk produces sophisticated yet accessible coverage of the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court and Department of Justice as well as electoral politics. Our focus is on the nexus of policy, politics and culture. We draw connections between the places political leaders come from, the people they represent and the policies they embrace. We consider the role of cultural and demographic change as we aim to illuminate governance and politics. Fact-checking and explanatory journalism are vital to our mission as well as breaking news with clarity and context. Our coverage is featured on Morning EditionAll Things Considered, NPR.org, the NPR Politics Podcast, and UpFirst.

The Washington Desk is looking for a dexterous digital and social media producer, committed to collaborative storytelling. The producer will facilitate the creation of smart, webby and visual content to help drive NPR Politics’ social conversations. The successful candidate will build on the desk's news-driven content to engage and grow our digital/social audience.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Maintain and curate NPR Politics social properties on a daily basis.
  • Produce and promote engaging presentation of political stories for NPR.org.
  • Create multimedia elements, including videos, audio, photo galleries, and interactive elements, as assigned.
  • Write headlines, promo copy and captions.
  • Assist in planning and covering engaging digital/social coverage of breaking news and feature stories as well as special packages and projects.
  • Produce and promote engaging presentation of NPR Politics stories for NPR.org and the politics newsletter.
  • Generate story ideas and follow through on them.
  • Collaborate with Digital News and Visuals teams.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university or equivalent in journalism, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least two years’ experience managing social media channels for a major news/media brand and demonstrated ability to participate in, contribute to and grow online communities.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Familiarity with navigating a variety of content management systems
  • Ability to craft a comprehensive, cross-platform social strategy
  • Ability to document internal processes and analyze audience data
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions
  • Ability to both work independently and collaborate with others
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts
  • Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graphic design or illustration experience
  • Familiarity with social video and digital video editing and production
