Experience Corps is an evidence-based, award-winning AARP Foundation literacy program, utilizing highly trained volunteers age 50 and over to mentor students in kindergarten through third grade. The program improves the literacy rates of children, enriches the lives of our volunteers and strengthens schools in the communities we serve.
Providing technical expertise related to tutoring and mentoring, the Academic Tutoring and Mentoring Partner ensures that the service delivery, training and program operations are aligned to engage older adult volunteers in strong tutoring and mentoring literacy opportunities for children. The Partner works closely with all members of the training, evaluation and program teams to monitor program performance and make revisions as needed. The Academic Tutoring and Mentoring Partner monitors overall program performance and compliance, which may, at the discretion of the Branch Director, include day to day oversight of Community Engagement Specialists who are responsible for program delivery and volunteer management.
- Program Management: Design, monitor and review program services according to Experience Corps Standards, ensuring that schedules are met, guidelines are achieved, education needs are met, and performance is high quality.
- Program Management: Plan and schedule program and event coverage, based on time availability, school needs, survey data, and participant demographics.
- Team Oversight: At the discretion of and in coordination with the Branch Director, oversee activities of professional, technical, and administrative staff members and volunteer corps.
- Program Quality: Coordinate with the Community Engagement Specialist (CES) to oversee and coordinate activities of personnel & volunteers engaged in the site-level tutoring and mentoring programs to ensure fidelity to the academic and evaluation goals of EC.
- Site Management: Coordinate with the CES to monitor programs for concerns related to the program schedules, program content, or program changes. With CES, communicate with school site personnel regarding concerns, problem solving, assessments, and changes while fostering positive working relationships.
- Site Support: Maintain volunteer/school management functions through regular visits and monthly on-site team meetings.
- Relationship Management: Engage in effective communications to maintain strong community relationships; provide for frequent communications with program staff, volunteer corps, school administrators and teachers.
- Volunteer Training and Management: Coordinate and collaborate with the Volunteer Recruiter and the Community Engagement Specialist to ensure effective training and management of all volunteers.
- Team Leader Management: Coordinate with the Community Engagement Specialist (CES) on the selection, recruitment, training, and professional development of volunteer Team Leaders who manage daily operations at each school.
- Team Leader Support: Coordinate with the CES to support volunteer Team Leaders in screening, placing and managing Experience Corps volunteers; guide team building and leadership development. Assist engagement staff and team leaders with planning, organizing, training and directing the volunteer corps.
- Volunteer Experience: Research and analyze volunteer and community needs to determine program direction and goals.
- Program Evaluation: Oversee the EC program evaluation process to ensure quality performance, significant impact, and the overall morale of those engaged in delivering the EC program.
- Continuous Improvement: In coordination with the Branch Director, evaluate new and existing programs to assess suitability and the need for changes, using information such as participant surveys and feedback.
- Data Management: Develop, implement and maintain training to continually improve staff execution of evaluation and data tracking.
- Records Maintenance and Reporting: In coordination with the Branch Director, oversee the preparation and maintenance of records and reports (such as program budgets), volunteer records, and Leadership & Learning training programs.
- Volunteer File Maintenance: Oversee the branch processes of volunteer documentation management for file completeness and compliance.
- Professional Reporting: Deliver written reports summarizing program activities, trainings, and progress on an as-needed basis.

- Representing the Program: At the discretion of the Branch Director, the partner may serve as liaison with education and community groups explaining, interpreting and monitoring program purposes, standards, and policies. The partner may be engaged in interactively supporting the full EC network.
- Four (4) years or more years' experience in the delivery of tutoring and/or mentoring programs in a volunteer-based environment.
- An ability to interact with 50+ adults at all times with patience, compassion and caring.
- An ability to engage all stakeholders with empathy and positivity in a solutions-oriented manner.
- An ability to listen attentively and patiently and to communicate clearly and appropriately in person, by phone and by email.
- An ability to earn the trust and respect of a team and to promote a spirit of cooperation and collaboration among team members.
- An ability to speak publicly, to create and deliver presentations, and to deliver information to a large group fluently and effectively.
- The ability to demonstrate leadership experience through social, emotional and conversational intelligence, conflict management, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.
- The ability to determine when someone is at academic or physical risk and to report such risk in a timely and professional manner.
- A genuine passion for academic tutoring & mentoring and a demonstrated interest in intergenerational programs.
