Amnesty International’s Member Leadership & Training Unit recruits, develops, and directs volunteer leaders from across the U.S. who specialize in action on specific countries or issues or on legislative concerns. These volunteers play a critical role in advancing the organization’s ability to win human rights victories. The volunteer leader positions are:
- Country/Thematic Specialists: More than 100 volunteers serve as Country or Thematic Specialists, providing insight into the development of effective human rights strategies and serving as coordinators who mobilize wider audiences on country or issue-focused actions.
- Legislative Coordinators (LCs) help mobilize activists in their state on key legislative initiatives. They develop relationships with Members of Congress and their staff, and they train other Amnesty members in how to influence their elected officials.
- Area Coordinators (ACs) are organizers in their communities to advance AI's human rights agenda and support the larger human rights movement. They work to build AI's local presence through various activities, including event organizing and other advocacy tactics.
- Student Activist Coordinators (SACs) are experienced organizers responsible for implementing and leading Amnesty International USA's student and youth activism in their assigned states and across the country.
- The State Death Penalty Abolition Coordinators (SDPACs) keep AI groups, volunteer leaders, and staff informed of death penalty news in their state and mobilizes activists to take action when executions are scheduled. Additionally, SDPACs mobilize activists to engage in grassroots legislative advocacy.
Areas of Responsibility:
Interns work closely with MLT staff in Washington, DC, to develop this cadre of volunteer leaders and position them to advance Amnesty’s human rights agenda. Duties include:
- Administration of the recruitment process, including researching candidates, developing recruitment sources, marketing available positions, and follow-through.
- Updating and developing databases to facilitate contact with volunteer leaders.
- Assisting in the development of training and promotional materials
- Tracking unit expenses and budget
- Trouble-shooting problems that arise
- Assisting with mobilizing action on selected initiatives.
- Organizing meetings, conference calls, etc.
Skills/Experience:
- Interest in (and preferably commitment to) human rights
- Familiarity with Amnesty International’s work
- Strong office and computer skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Well-organized, dependable, and responsible
- Ability to work well as part of a team, as well as independently
- Ability to juggle multiple projects without loss of attention to details
