Integrated Communications & Marketing is a multimedia, service-focused communications and marketing operation that leads in shaping the impression of AARP by providing communications planning, marketing, support and execution for AARP’s strategic business units. 


Summary Statement

The Media Relations Editorial Manager will produce content, distribution plans and an editorial calendar in support of AARP’s Media Relations function that serves to increase visibility and awareness for AARP’s advocacy work, consumer offerings, member benefits and events.  The position will oversee the AARP Media Relations team’s blog, Twitter account, podcast work and more.  The position will also serve as the business unit’s primary copyeditor and proofreader.


Responsibilities

  1. Through compelling, engaging content, will help to manage the overall reputation and image of the AARP brand among target audiences.
  2. Develop and maintain editorial calendar for content production and distribution.
  3. Proactively develop timely and relevant digital content to capitalize on developing news angles and trends. Content areas include health, financial services, consumer protection, entertainment, caregiving, and more.
  4. Oversee the AARP’s media relations blog, Twitter account and podcast.
  5. Leverage and expand the organization’s digital media presence including cultivating new reporter/blogger contacts to increase positive media coverage.  Pitch stories to reporters and bloggers.
  6. Serve as the Media Relations team’s primary copyeditor and proofreader.  
  7. Use performance metrics to improve quality, reach and impact of AARP’s work.
  8. Collaborate with teams across AARP’s communication channels to ensure consistency, cohesion, relevance and impact for various integrated public relations campaigns.
  9. Demonstrate a relentless commitment to achieving results in a highly fluid, unpredictable environment.

Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related discipline.
  2. 6+ of related media experience. Demonstrated experience in project management and content production and distribution.
  3. Strong interpersonal, writing and editing skills.
  4. Ability to work effectively and calmly in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  5. Demonstrated ability to develop and execute measurably effective pitching, outreach and distribution efforts on behalf of a high-profile organization.
