The National Geographic Society provides free and low-cost resources for PreK-12 formal and informal educators to inspire them to teach their students about the world while connecting to National Geographic resources and programs. In 2018, the education team will launch a set of online courses for educators related to National Geographic content and will expand the online version of the Nat Geo Educator Certification Program.

The Manager of online learning will facilitate online courses for educators, oversee the online Nat Geo Educator Certification Program, and manage a Learning Management System (LMS). The manager will support our new online educator community and promote rich and rewarding conversations between educators.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Course Facilitation and Strategy - Facilitates multiple courses at a time and leads the full online experience of the Nat Geo Educator Certification Program within the Learning Management System (LMS). Creates and manages course schedules and metrics within the LMS and develops and implements recruitment strategies. Develops strategies to encourage completion of the certification program and online courses. (40%)
  • Community Engagement - Builds community with educators participating in courses through the management of discussion boards and small groups within the LMS and on the online educator community. Creates meaningful opportunities for educators to connect with each other and National Geographic. Works with the Educator Community Manager to create a community/online learning pipeline by bringing community members into courses and encouraging course participants to engage in our online educator community. (20%)
  • Technology Management - Implements new Learning Management System (LMS) with digital team to ensure the system is fully functional and meets the needs of instructional designers and course participants. Uploads and manages all course content. Provides strategic recommendations on use of LMS and other digital tools to provide innovative, effective online and blended learning experiences. (20%)
  • Collaboration - Serves as a main point of contact with internal groups that support online learning experiences for educators. This includes instructional designers, subject matter experts, the online community manager, the certification manager, and marketing team. Provides recommendations on innovative online learning experiences and co-creates new experiences with instructional designers and subject matter experts. Partners with the online and web teams to solve technical issues as needed. Connects and collaborates with like-minded partner organizations. (20%)
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Instructional Design, Community Management, or related field is required.
Skills/Experience: 

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

  • 5+ years of online learning, community management, instructional design, or project management experience required.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Excellent project management and organizational skills with a high attention to detail; self-direction and motivation; sensitivity to deadline-driven workflow; ability to handle a variety of projects with changing priorities in a dynamic environment. Stellar written, verbal, and online communication skills; collaborative, team-oriented work style. Proficiency in Office suite. Familiarity with Learning Management Systems, content management systems, and online communities strongly preferred. Experience working with educators preferred.
