Manager, Measurement & Evaluation

National Geographic Society’s recently created Measurement and Evaluation (M&E) department seeks a dynamic, flexible, and results-oriented individual with extensive and relevant experience in measurement and evaluation. This is a wonderful opportunity for the right individual to help establish and refine best practices around outcomes-based planning, measurement, evaluation, reporting, and learning. The M&E Manager will collaborate closely with the grants team to help measure and evaluate the individual and collective results of our requests for proposals to help inform decision-making and identify opportunities for improvement.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provide support to grants team to identify goals and articulate evaluation questions, develop logic models, articulate theory of change, specify milestones, and identify and monitor relevant indicators for requests for proposals. (30%)
  • Develop evaluation plans, including selecting appropriate evaluation design and developing data collection tools. (30%)
  • Provide ad hoc analytic and research support. (20%)
  • Assist development of evaluation resources and training to internal stakeholders and grantees. Share and celebrate culture of learning. Keep up with research and best practices. (20%)
Educational Background: 
Master’s degree required, preferably in measurement and evaluation, environmental or biological science, or related discipline. PhD preferred.
Skills/Experience: 

Five to seven+ years professional experience in planning, conducting, and managing evaluations required. M&E experience at a foundation, research institute, or consulting firm strongly preferred.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Extensive experience with and knowledge of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed research methods to produce actionable findings, including data synthesis and analysis
  • Experience designing (quasi-) experimental program evaluation designs (experience with implementation and developing data collection instruments preferred)
  • High proficiency with statistical analysis packages (SPSS, SAS, Q, or R)
  • Demonstrated record of managing complex projects, meeting deadlines, and handling competing and changing priorities
  • Superior interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to work with and advise program staff and grantees with a positive and collaborative attitude
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Well organized with acute attention to detail while being able to see the big picture
  • Highly motivated self-starter with strong work ethic
  • Strong desire to continuously learn and take on new challenges
