Role Summary:
The Marketing team is seeking a Junior Designer who is a creative thinker and doer with a passion for design and advertising. The candidate has a clear understanding of design principles and attention to detail with exceptional composition and typography skills.
The Junior Designer works with the Junior Copywriter and the Marketing team, and will play an active role in creative brainstorms, concept development, and project kick-offs. S/he will be responsible for event collateral (posters, programs, event banners, website graphics, etc.), small campaigns (website images, web ads, print ads, iTunes promotional pieces), stationary, posters, product development for the shop.npr.org, and additional projects.
Essential Duties Include:- Execution of conceptual, original, and creative work in print and digital
- Work alongside the Junior Copywriter on various campaigns and projects across NPR
- Support the Marketing Department in visual brand stewardship, ensuring that the NPR brand is properly displayed and represented
- Play an active role in cross-departmental brainstorms
- Participate in presentations of creative concepts and products to internal and external parties
- Administrative responsibilities include: respond to staff requests for marketing materials, organize and maintain design archive, archive digital assets for completed projects, prepare creative presentations, and maintain stationary
Required:
- Minimum 1-year experience in a creative role (in-house or agency)
- BFA in design, art direction or Advertising. MFA preferred.
- Minimal travel required.
- A conceptually-driven portfolio with strong print and digital samples including, but not limited to: brand identity, promotional work (advertising campaigns), and layout collateral pieces.
- Capacity to work both independently and with a team of creatives to solve design challenges
- Ability to express creative ideas verbally and through sketches.
- Practical experience working with print vendors and digital agencies/departments.
- Advanced knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
Preferred:
- Ability to do hand-lettering and illustration
- Storyboarding experience, a plus
- Passionate about the NPR brand. (Yes, we’ll be quizzing you.)
