The Office of General Counsel strives to actively and effectively represent the Association and its affiliates' legal interests and to facilitate the efforts of staff and volunteers in fulfilling AARP's mission.  We provides legal guidance to the AARP Board of Directors and its committees and staff, the AARP Foundation Board of Directors and staff, AARP Services Board of Directors and staff, and the trustees of the AARP Group Health Insurance Program.

 


Summary Statement

The Internal Audit Director reports to the Senior Vice President of Audit, Ethics & Compliance Officer and will perform under considerable independence and in a team approach in managing the Quality Assurance Program.  The Director will be responsible for Internal Audit’s quality assurance program and review of the audit work to ensure compliance with departmental and professional standards. The Director will be involved in the development and completion of the annual audit strategy and audit plan which includes conducting continuous risk assessments which leverage AARP’s enterprise risk management process.  The Director provides management direction in planning risk-based, compliance and information technology audits as well as supervising auditors on audits and special projects on some IT audits.    The Director serves as an IT Audit expert for Internal Audit and may lead some IT audits and assist with other audits.  The Director will assist in establishing a framework for clients to engage Internal Audit in project management with the goal of providing assurance as the project meets specific milestones rather than auditing after the project has been completed.  The incumbent will be a proactive and strategic partner to colleagues throughout AARP which includes all affiliates. 

 


Responsibilities

Since Internal Audit covers a wide range of audit disciplines and all aspects of the organization, this position must be attuned to the diverse, complex operations of the entire enterprise, in order to add value to senior management and the Boards of Directors, and provide guidance throughout the organization.  This is a hands-on position which interfaces with the most senior levels of management, as well as planning, conducting, and/or directing audit engagements. The incumbent must be detail, action, solution and results oriented and dedicated to continuous improvement.  The Director will provide leadership, direction, as well as Quality Assurance Management and audit planning, programming and reporting. This position requires the ability to manage one’s own time and resources and the time of others when working as the Lead Auditor.  This position requires the discipline to meet deadlines and to perform Quality Assurance activities in a timely manner.  Directly responsible for conducting various types of audits, consulting reviews, and special projects to ensure department and team success. Interacts with team members, client/department management and staff, and external auditors.  

Responsibilities include: 

• Establish procedures and plan for conducting internal control audits and maintain Quality Assurance Program.

• Identify, understand, and document processes and procedures surrounding internal controls, i.e., create and maintain an enterprise-wide audit universe and assurance map. 

• Continually monitor and update the assessment of the control environment, keeping abreast of significant control issues, trends and developments including but not limited to chairing assurance committee.

• Identify and assess the implementation of new controls as necessary.

• Assist with preparing and updating a comprehensive risk-based audit plan for evaluating the effectiveness of controls in place to manage significant risk exposures, insure the integrity and reliability of information.  

• Monitor and audit the company’s compliance with established internal controls.

• Report findings to senior management. 

• Coordinate activities with external auditors to support their audit and review procedures.

 


Requirements

Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline required.  MBA preferred. Minimum of 5+ years of experience in Information Technology auditing, or public accounting experience with an emphasis on Information Technology auditing and Quality Assurance.  CPA, CIA, CFE, or CISA preferred.

Candidate should have the ability to develop creative approaches and solutions necessary to solve complex problems.
Strong written and verbal communications skills with experience interacting with and presenting to senior management-level personnel.
General knowledge and experience with business process reviews and benchmarking and audit research desired.  Working knowledge of computer proficiency required, especially with word processing, flowcharting, and spreadsheet software.
