We are currently looking for dynamic cause driven leaders to take on an Executive Director role leading one of our branches in the Metropolitan Washington region (Washington DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia). We have multiple opportunities available leading over 200 employees and managing a budget of $5 to $8 million. Services provided to the community include preschool, after-school programs, day camps, aquatics, swimming and sports leagues, and adult wellness programs.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Under the general supervision of the Vice President of Operations, the Executive Director is responsible for establishing and implementing the mission, goals, and values of the YMCA within the branch community. The incumbent must be a team motivator with the ability to create an environment that delivers exceptional customer service to grow membership and program participation, along with achieving local fund raising objectives.

Qualified applicants must have experience working with a Board, managing fund-raising campaigns, developing strong relationships with community leaders, strategic planning, staff leadership/development and have a proven record of successful fiscal management.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and control the annual operating budget consistent with the guidelines set up by the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington.
  • Create and maintain high quality programing and service that meets the current and future needs of the community with financial, human and capital resources available in partnership with the core business champions.
  • Provide primary leadership in designing and directing all branch fundraising programs, including, annual support, endowment and capital campaign.
  • Develop and maintain positive and impactful partnerships in the community with business and civic leaders, government and other select organizations and agencies.
  • Manage the facilities and property of the branch and off-sites to ensure high standards of maintenance and cleanliness and requirements of codes and laws are met.
  • Ensure that the YMCA has a high performing, dedicated, and culturally competent staff, with a charitable spirit and passion for the YMCA mission.
  • Provide leadership to branch staff through establishment of high performance goals and standards, regular assessment of staff performance including formal performance evaluations, and staff meetings.
  • Deliver a dynamic, customer-focused plan to ensure the YMCA’s membership retention and acquisition goals are met. Implement an ongoing member involvement plan that moves members from a casual to committed relationship with the YMCA and increases the number of members involved as donors and volunteers.
  • Ensures the safety and maintenance of high quality facilities, grounds, and equipment including all off-site locations.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Five years of operational and leadership experience.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in business administration/human services or equivalent experience
  • YMCA experience a plus
  • Proven track record of successful fund-raising experience.
  • Proven track record of successful fiscal and budget management.
  • Experience working with volunteers and advisory boards
  • Proven track record of successful relationship building with corporate partners, community entities, civic leaders and associations, and schools leadership.
  • Computer skills, proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word and Excel).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to successfully manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience leading operations in excess of $5M, and staff supervision of 100 or more.
  • Strong sense of business ethics and integrity
  • Pleasant, professional public image and effective public speaking and presentation skills
  • Flexibility to work a variable schedule as dictated by programming, fundraising and meeting schedules
