The Events Specialist works within the National Geographic’s Education division as member of the Experiences staff. The specialist works under the supervision of the Student Events Manager and is responsible for operations and logistical support for Explorer Classroom and Student Matinee programs, as well as providing support for content and speaker development and doing research and reporting for both programs. The specialist works closely with NGS and NGP teams, as well as NGS fellows, explorers, external venues, and schools.
1. Explorer Classroom operations and logistics. Responsible for logistics and coordination for the Explorer Classroom program. Maintain schedule and workflow for Explorer Classroom team. Coordinate communications with participating classrooms. Support digital creation of YouTube events, registration forms, and ancillary materials. (30%)
2. Student Matinees operations and logistics. Responsible for logistics and coordination for live events, as well as other events and workshops, in Washington D.C. and nationally. Develop and track seasonal schedules, and maintain workflow processes. Develop and maintain event calendars and task lists across the team and numerous external partners. Assist with event operations in Washington, D.C. (30%)
3. Content Development. Assist with content development for Student Matinee events and Explorer Classroom sessions. Work with speakers and presenters to develop and refine narrative. Participate in speaker coaching sessions. (20%)
4. Reporting and Research. Create and maintain systems for tracking Explorer Classroom analytics and metrics. Manage survey creation and distribution for Student Matinee programs. Manage production of annual program reports and required development reports. Research trends and keep current in educational technology and live video. (15%)
5. Stay current on NGS mission and values, and participate in department-wide initiatives. Stay up-to-date on developments in K-12 education, especially in educational technology. (5%)
Minimum Education Required
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
- 3+ years experience working in K-12 education, with a preference for experience in informal education. Experience and knowledge in digital and/or video preferred.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Excellent written, verbal, and digital communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills, and ability to prioritize and work under deadlines.
- Ability to tend to multiple projects simultaneously.
- Great attention to detail.
- Proficiency with software including Microsoft Office suite, Mac OS, and familiarity with YouTube content creation.
