Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an Associate to provide administrative assistance to its Asia Division. The Asia Division is a part of the Program Department. The Program Department consists of regional and thematic divisions and oversees research, reporting and various other work. The Asia Division works to advance human rights in Asia and conducts a wide range of work, including investigation, report writing, advocacy and media work. The position will be based in the Washington, DC office and reports to the Washington, DC-based Asia Advocacy Director and China Director. HRW anticipates that the successful candidate will begin this position in February 2018.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Provide day-to day administrative support to Asia Division staff, such as scheduling, making travel arrangements, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, creating and maintaining extensive filing and archiving systems, processing mail, and responding to requests for information;
- Maintain communication among all staff locations, headquarters, and other HRW offices in order to ensure efficient support to the Asia Division;
- Assist with preparing, drafting, proofreading, editing, formatting and distributing materials such as news releases, reports, tables, charts, briefing papers, op eds, publications and web content;
- Coordinate and support US government advocacy, including scheduling official meetings, managing subscriptions, and building and maintaining contact databases;
- Attend external working-group meetings and occasionally representing HRW at meetings and events, including with researchers and other colleagues;
- Assist with desk research, news monitoring, electronic clippings, wires and translations;
- Assist with planning and executing roundtables and special events with visitors, NGOs, and government officials;
- Recruit and coordinate interns;
- Record, track, and process divisional finances in a timely manner; and
- Carry out other duties as required.
Skills/Experience:
Education: A bachelor’s degree in international studies, social science, political science, Asian studies, or a related field is required.
Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.

- Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications is required.
