Reporting to ASI’s General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel assists in protecting ASI’s legal interests and maintaining its operation within the scope established by law. Responsible for identifying and analyzing legal issues and for leading complex legal matters and contract negotiations for ASI.  Performs a variety of complicated tasks.  Negotiates and advises on contracts, new business models, legal risks and other ASI-related transactions and represents ASI’s legal position in such areas.  Supports internal business clients on developing solutions to complex legal issues with an understanding of AARP’s social mission.  Responsible for ensuring legal risks are addressed and mitigation solutions developed.  Provides support to the General Counsel on general legal matters.  Helps develop policies and procedures to ensure legal compliance.  Should be familiar with a variety of legal concepts including insurance, trademark, trusts, privacy, HIPPA, and relevant government regulations.  Relies on extensive experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provides legal counsel to the ASI management team in a professional and effective manner to help achieve business goals within legal and ethical guidelines, while helping to execute AARP Services’ strategy for growth and promoting achievement of its vision.
  • Negotiates and manages highly complex and high profile contracts and agreements with Fortune 100 –companies, which account for over $1 billion in annually-managed revenues to the AARP enterprise.
  • Provides legal guidance and support to the staff of ASI on all legal matters, including but not limited to:  contractual issues, litigation, advertising laws, insurance laws, intellectual property, consumer protection laws, privacy, HIPPA, federal and state regulations, tax law, and non-profit law.
  • Responsible for contract management, compliance and risk management in a highly matrix environment.
  • Stays current on legal issues potentially impacting ASI and its affiliates, including federal and state regulations. Understand industry and marketplace trends, as well as the strategic direction of the organization and its internal initiatives. Communicate potential legal impacts and trends to various business areas.
  • Works proactively with ASI’s General Counsel to ensure the interest of both AARP Services and AARP are accurately represented and protected.
  • Anticipates legal developments relevant to AARP Services’ activities and advises on their implications in a proactive manner. 
  • Provides legal support to ASI's affiliated entities, as needed.
  • Responsible for selecting and managing outside legal counsel, as necessary.
  • Advises staff of ASI and its affiliates throughout the creation, development and implementation of new products and services.
  • Develops and maintains close working relationships with in house counsel of service providers to ensure effective and timely resolution to issues.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with business clients as well as AARP OGC staff.
  • Works across ASI to ensure legal and compliance issues are addresses and managed.
Educational Background: 
JD from an accredited law school
Skills/Experience: 
  • 15+ years of relevant experience; exhibits ability to effectively listen and understand business requirements; excellent oral and written communication skills; self-starter; ability to make independent decisions consistent with General Counsel guidance and comply with policies and procedures.
  • Must be admitted to the DC Bar or can be admitted. This position is based in Washington, DC.
