The Assistant Controller will report to and support the Controller in directing and managing many facets of NPR’s Accounting department. This position is critical to the future effectiveness of the Accounting department and would be considered for promotion to Controller should a change in Controller occur. This individual will oversee not only functional areas within the Accounting department, but also some aspects of reporting. The Assistant Controller will also manage and perform monthly close activities, as well as monthly and annual financial reporting.
- Lead Procurement, Cash Disbursement, and Billing/Revenue operation teams (three direct reports – all managers; five indirect reports) and supervise other critical processes within the Accounting department; these duties include significant responsibilities for ensuring the accurate and timely processing of all:
- Significant revenue recognition, excluding contributed income, billing, and cash receipts application activities; and
- Procurement and disbursement activities, such as the weekly processing of vendor payments and employee expense reimbursements, daily petty cash distributions, vendor maintenance, and vendor purchase orders.
- Participate significantly in any periodic and annual audits
- Partner with Controller and Financial Reporting Manager to ensure accuracy and integrity of financial reporting and execution of monthly and annual close calendar (e.g., prepare, review, and approve journal entries; eliminate inter-company activity as appropriate; perform financial statement and budget and forecast variance analysis; maintain general ledger and reconciliations; perform analysis of reserve for bad debts and suggest adjustments to the CFO/T and Controller; conduct collection activities; perform ad hoc analysis of financial activities; coordinate and if necessary, perform, external reporting [e.g., 1099s])
- Ensure proper internal controls are in place and operating effectively
- Provide direction to and partner with departments throughout NPR regarding accounting policies and procedures, implementation of new practices and procedures, and efficient control and utilization of financial resources
- Partner with Human Resources, CFO/T, and Controller to effectively hire, train, and evaluate all staff directly and indirectly supervised
- Build productive relationships throughout the Finance division and organization
- Support division staff liaison activities to specific Board of Directors’ Committees
- Participate in/lead a variety of special projects on an as-needed basis
- Develop one-off current and historical financial reports/analysis at the request of either the CFO/T and/or Controller
Required Skills:
- Minimum ten years of progressive experience in finance and accounting (experience with nonprofit organizations is a differentiating factor), of which more than four years were in a management and leadership role
- Demonstrated knowledge of current accounting developments, technology, practice, and regulation relative to nonprofits (experience in public media industry is differentiating factor)
- Proven organization, communication, and people skills necessary to manage a staff that provides fast, reliable service while promoting high team cohesiveness, participation, morale, and spirit
- Proven analytical and accounting skills
- Superior written/oral communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to interpret and conceptualize practical, as well as abstract problems, where full or incomplete information exists, and make sound and innovative conclusions, solutions, decisions, and recommendations accordingly
- Demonstrated understanding of sound management and supervisory principles (e.g., proven ability to build trusting relationships with employees utilizing effective coaching and discipline techniques to ensure maximum productivity and completion of work goals; proven ability to mentor staff)
- Demonstrated proficiency in use of general ledger/sub-ledgers and other computer system applications (experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP is a differentiating factor)
