Advocacy and Civil Society Engagement Manager

As a coalition of partners all working to achieve the goal of greater access to family planning services and commodities, FP2020 works with an array of family planning stakeholders in the U.S., Europe, and the developing world. With guidance from the Global Advocacy Rights and Youth Senior Director, this position will support FP2020’s work involving civil society engagement at both the global and country level, including with advocacy networks such as the UK SRHR community, EuroNGOs, the International Planned Parenthood Federation, Marie Stopes International, Population Action International, Advance Family Planning, the International Family Planning Coalition, and with myriad in-country advocacy networks and civil society members.

Working Relationships:

The Advocacy Manager reports to the Global Advocacy, Rights and Youth Director, FP2020, and works closely with all portfolio directors and support-level staff to ensure collaboration and coordination across the FP2020 Secretariat on advocacy-related issues as outlined below.

This position will build strong linkages between communications and advocacy, with close coordination on action, social media, and reporting to strengthen political commitment to family planning, and will raise awareness of global events or moments, breaking events and news, and opportunities to advance local FP2020 partner goals.  There also will be strong connections with Country Support and Partner Relations to advance the work among a multitude of partners while Data Performance and Management (DPM) is key to developing the data that drives evidence-based advocacy.

Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities of the Partner Relations and Global Advocacy Coordinator include:

Support global advocacy and strengthen alliances with advocacy coalitions and other family planning partners and stakeholders.  Illustrative activities can include:

  • Design, plan and implement advocacy strategies and campaigns for FP2020 in close coordination across the FP2020 Secretariat and with external partners.
  • Drive strategic alliance-building efforts for FP2020 through increased outreach and communications with partners in family planning and in other sectors (education, environment, SRMNCAH, security, humanitarian, etc.).
  • Assess the advocacy needs of all secretariat portfolio teams and Focal Points, particularly the Civil Society Focal Points.
  • Assist with messaging, announcements, links to key actions, mobilization around issues, and other key support functions.
  • Translate FP2020 data/annual report findings into advocacy tools that can be used at the global or country level.
  • Represent FP2020 in various networks, movements.

Support in-country advocacy and engagement of Civil Society in FP2020 processes 

  • In partnership with the Secretariat’s Country Support team, prepare civil society partners to meaningfully participate in and contribute to FP2020 Focal Point networks including in workshops, and development of action plans.
  • Organize and support CSO meetings that coincide with in-country FP2020-organized meetings to share key outcomes, promote data understanding and use in advocacy, and contribute to development of a strategic advocacy agenda that supports country partners in reaching their FP2020 goals.
  • Contribute to the drafting of relevant advocacy and country CSO support products and quarterly and annual reporting requirements for donors.

Strategic Planning and Programmatic Oversight

  • Assist with the development and organization of advocacy-related meetings and special events for the Advocacy, Rights and Youth team (YARG).  This may include, but not be limited to, managing correspondence with speakers, and invitees, agenda planning and developing the invitation list.  
  • Assist in budget development for YARG as a whole and for advocacy specifically.

External Relations and Communications

  • Assist in the development of messaging and materials on the importance of family planning, including the critical link to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights and to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and other related issues.
  • Identify and help develop effective advocacy communications opportunities.
  • Develop and execute FP2020’s advocacy communications strategy in close coordination with the Communications team and across all FP2020 offices.
Skills/Experience: 

In addition to having a proven ability to carry out the above responsibilities, the successful candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, public health, international development, communications, or other directly related field.
  • Master’s degree in public policy, public health, international development, communications, or other directly related field preferred.
  • Demonstrable advocacy skills.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience, with project management, advocacy and coalition building, and strategic communications expertise.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to communicate well with diverse
  • audiences ranging from in-country CSOs to high level donors and country representatives.
  • Strong oral, written, editorial and presentation skills.
  • Team player with adaptable and pragmatic approach to work, able to work independently as well as with a team.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills and the ability to meet deadlines and deliver objectives on time despite time constraints and pressure situations.
  • Excellent organization skills, capable of delivering objectives independently.
  • Ability to think strategically and help drive projects from inception to implementation.
  • Professional background in country level work essential
  • Knowledge and familiarity with the United Nations and international reproductive health/FP partnerships.
  • Advanced knowledge of and proficiency in the MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Fluent in English. Proficiency in French desirable.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25%.  
  • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
