The Specialist will be responsible for collecting, ingesting, applying metadata, researching rights and clearance information, creating accurate descriptions and precise key wording using the taxonomies that are departmentally specific, dynamic and ever changing.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Ingest, Catalog, and Metadata QC

  • Ingest, review, and catalog all operating programs, Grants, Fellows, and Storytelling grantee media assets. (photos/videos/audio/documents) attaching correct metadata and ensuring legal rights compliance. 
  • Assist in building and ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures for asset cataloging, search and usage. 
  • Assist impact media team in highlighting and promoting Society media assets for broad use on Society and its Partners platforms. 
  • Collaborate with Operating Programs and Storytelling teams on media assets for Fellows & grantees. (70%)

Department Collaboration

  • Maintain local documentation on metadata standards and guidelines for media asset team. 
  • Provide quality control for digital asset metadata from other departments.
  • Participates in evaluating workflows and developments in Digital Asset Management system and implementation. (15%)

Grantee Communication

  • Finalize grants media requirements and update grants management system. (SalesForce) 
  • Follow up with grantees to ensure completion of grants media requirements. (10%)

Department Communication

  • Fulfill 3rd party photo editing and video editing requests. (Lightroom and/or Premiere) (5%)
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 3 years of digital asset management, media cataloging and digital preservation. Understanding of modern media asset landscape and metadata and taxonomy. Familiarity with National Geographic Programs and initiatives a plus.

This position requires a firm and broad conceptual understanding of metadata principles and archival and digital collection technologies and the ability to apply and adapt them to existing and emerging media in a variety of formats.

  • Must be capable of exercising flexibility, multitasking and working effectively with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with high-profile storytelling talent (photographers, filmmakers, journalists).
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with multiple internal stakeholders.
  • Strong research and organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail, ability to understand and prioritize multiple requests from different team members.
  • Must be a self-guided, highly organized, and motivated individual;
  • Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to work through problem-solving on a new team.
  • Understanding of media legal and rights terminology. 
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop, LightRoom, Photo Mechanic and Premiere.
