This position is important in the Meetings/Membership Department, and the core responsibilities of the position include:

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Public Health Engagement and Communications Specialist contributes to the advancement of local public health practice by performing a range of operational and strategic responsibilities related to NACCHO’s membership and meetings functions. The Specialist will develop and support communications engagement strategies in line with NACCHO’s strategic plan – working on programs and processes that generate approximately 95% of the organization’s unrestricted revenue from membership dues and meetings (registration, exhibits, and sponsorships).

The Specialist will serve as a liaison between NACCHO’s Affiliate Business Partners, for-profit organizations interested in supporting and working with local public health departments (LHDs). Liaison activities will include facilitating webinars, sessions at NACCHO’s national conferences, focus groups, and writing research briefs, as well as disseminating partner initiatives through NACCHO’s communication platforms.

The Specialist will help the Membership and Meetings team promote member benefits, provide exemplary member service, and offer recommendations to continuously improve the membership and meetings experiences to advance NACCHO’s mission.

The Specialist understands the implications of internal and external policies that impact their position. They typically perform analysis, research, writing, and project management, and the Specialist can complete projects or components of large-scale projects and programs with little supervision. The Specialist may also communicate with internal and external stakeholders at a level commensurate with the position’s duties and expectations. The Specialist will have frequent contact with NACCHO members, executive leadership at outside organizations, and internal customers that may involve project coordination, information sharing, or resolution of problems.

POSITION-SPECIFIC DUTIES

The Public Health Engagement and Communications Specialist is responsible for providing communications support for membership and meetings functional activities and is expected to perform tasks of moderate difficulty including research, writing, and analysis; proofreading, production, and publishing; marketing and media relations; and all related work associated under the direction of the Director of Membership and Meetings with minimal supervision. General responsibilities include substantive writing (creative and technical), editing, copyediting, and proofreading reports and publications; developing and maintaining web pages; managing membership and meetings projects, including facilitating partner webinars and publication deliverables; leading conference marketing activities; providing communications support at events and conferences; and promoting the work and achievements of NACCHO and local health departments using all forms of media including traditional and new media outlets.

  • Conveys information directly to external audiences, including, but not limited to, NACCHO members, conference attendees, and organizational partners, via newsletters, email, social media, video, and the NACCHO website.
  • Develops written materials including, but not limited to, newsletters, e-newsletters, social media, news releases, fact sheets, op-eds, case studies, etc.
  • Manages member and affiliate business partner webinars from start to finish, including creation, promotion, facilitation, and dissemination.
  • Creates and develops other affiliate business partner deliverables, including research briefs, focus groups, conference sessions, newsletters, and surveys.
  • Collaborates across Membership and Meetings Team to promote public health networking and recognition opportunities to members, including workgroup applications, awards, and student opportunities.
  • Tracks engagement and sponsorship deliverables using MS Excel and CRM database.
  • Implements marketing and engagement strategies and activities for NACCHO’s annual conferences, events, and online educational activities, using NACCHO’s various communication vehicles.
  • Identifies opportunities for new engagement activities to support membership and conferences, including through social media, and assists in implementing promotional activities.
  • Interfaces with NACCHO personnel, members, committees, partner organizations, and others to establish and maintain positive relationships and achieve NACCHO objectives.
  • Performs editorial and technical writing, follows style guides, and adapts writing styles for different audiences.
  • Proofreads to fix mistakes in spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.
  • Copyedits for style, voice, brevity, and tone.
  • Demonstrates high-quality customer service to a variety of internal and external audience members, especially NACCHO members.
  • Possesses advanced interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates strong skills in the use of social media e-marketing and Web application software to achieve communications, marketing, and/or engagement goals.
  • Develops timelines and project milestones to meet deadlines.
  • Effectively manages and coordinates multiple and conflicting priorities.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

Bachelor’s degree in relevant professional field with a minimum of three years of relevant experience and/or advanced technical training; or equivalent combination of education (Communications, Journalism, Public Health, Health Communications) and experience, including a relevant certification. An advanced degree may be substituted for work experience. On occasion, extensive practical experience may be substituted for formal education, particularly if the technical specialty is unusually complex or when long experience has a greater value to the organization than conceptual understanding. Master’s degree in a relevant field preferred.

  • A minimum of three years of relevant experience working in public health communications and/or engagement. Experience with non-profits, membership associations, or health communications desirable.
  • Public Health educational experience preferred.
  • Strong social media and website writing skills.
  • Able to use social media platforms and e-marketing software to achieve communications, marketing, and/or membership goals.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Customer service orientation and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with highest attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment while juggling multiple priorities.
  • Experience with non-profits, membership associations, or health communications desirable.
  • Knowledge of communications/marketing principles preferred.
  • Web experience (e.g., content management software) preferred.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Experience developing editorial and technical written materials is required.
  • Experience leading webinars and/or trainings preferred
  • Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Competent and proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.)

SALARY:  $57,920 -$61,360
