The Human Rights Campaign accomplishes its work through a partnership between its paid staff and grass-roots volunteer leaders in 33 HRC steering committee communities across the country, including on its national Board of Directors and Board of Governors.
Volunteers in HRC’s robust infrastructure engage in activism, advocacy, program work and membership development throughout the course of the year. These volunteer leaders and communities are vital to the success of the LGBTQ+ movement and HRC’s mission. They are also terrific ambassadors of our work.
The Associate Director of Volunteer Communications will be responsible for liaising between HRC staff and HRC leadership volunteers to continue to build a holistic communication infrastructure. This includes but is not limited to proactively communicating HRC plans and updates to volunteers while reactively managing across individual steering committee needs. This is a new position housed in the Development & Membership department but the Associate Director will closely partner with members of the Communications team as needed. It reports to the Director of Board & Volunteer Engagement and works closely with the Senior Vice President of Development & Membership.
The successful candidate for this position will have a background in internal or external communications, or stakeholder engagement. They will have a natural command of human dynamics and an interest in understanding the nuances of different communities as well as public and community relations. This role requires the ability to balance organizational needs and priorities with volunteer leadership-driven needs and capacity. They will be driven by a deep respect and appreciation for volunteerism and bring a customer service perspective in order to meet the needs of HRC’s volunteer-led organization.
● In partnership with staff, engage directly with HRC’s Board members and steering committee volunteers. Interpret and craft organizational language and communication assistance to help volunteer leaders represent HRC in their local communities with our steering committee members, donors and volunteers, answer questions and better respond to inquiries. Ensure that this vital volunteer workforce is equipped to navigate the myriad responsibilities they assume as volunteer ambassadors, and amplify their incredible efforts as individuals and communities.
● Draft email communication, craft and share key messaging documents, engage directly with volunteer leaders in order to directly support local events, and generate public attention for volunteer-led programming, events, lobbying and political activism.
● Individual volunteer leaders may also have unique moments of increased visibility themselves that can be leveraged to amplify HRC’s work. The Volunteer Communications Manager will come to learn, understand and engage directly with HRC’s volunteer leadership, in partnership with others across the department, and support them in their work to advance HRC’s mission and increase awareness of HRC’s work.
● Work with the Board & Volunteer Engagement staff team to draft and execute communications for volunteer leaders.
● Review and edit all materials intended for HRC volunteer infrastructure across departments for structure, accuracy, organizational consistency and appropriateness of content.
● In partnership with the HRC Communications Department, identify local pressworthy opportunities and help generate local press releases and communication strategies in support of the local work in communities.
● In partnership with HRC Communications Department, generate local press releases and communication strategies for local fundraising dinners and events and other programmatic work and help amplify.
● Map the local leaders’ contacts with media outlets and help to guide and direct their local media engagement.
● Create written materials that include press releases, media advisories, talking points, letters to the editor and various other communication priorities for various audiences.
When appropriate, travel to HRC communities to work press at events.
Social Media & Other Responsibilities
● Collaborate with the staff colleagues to develop and support volunteers in managing an active and relevant social media presence for HRC steering committee communities. Work closely with the Digital Marketing team on national campaigns and messaging. Maintain a social media calendar for scheduled posts and expected events as well as creating original and timely content specific to the respective HRC steering committee communities.
● Learn and be attuned to the development and membership work schedule and annual calendar. Proactively seek opportunities throughout the year’s activities for heightened visibility in HRC steering committee communities. Help the development and membership team position the work for increased exposure and to advance HRC’s mission.
● Other duties as assigned.
● A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent in experience) is required with at least five to eight years of work experience in internal or external communications or stakeholder engagement;
● An ability to work with many different people to understand their needs as representative of HRC, both inside the organization and across our vast volunteer network;
● A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, commitment to HRC’s organizational values and an intersectional perspective and approach;
● Outstanding verbal communications skills and writing talent;
● Strong skills with Microsoft Office applications (Word and Outlook), Google Apps (Gmail, Google Docs and Drive), and social media;
● Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines with fanatical attention to detail;
● Comfort working in a high-volume environment and ability to closely follow the messaging of the organization on a wide variety of issues;
● Flexibility with work schedule; this position requires some evening and weekend work to respond to breaking news;
● Ability to travel up to 10-15% of the time;
● Background or experience with LGBTQ+ rights and issues and American politics is important as is a thorough understanding of LGBTQ+ media.
All positions at the Human Rights Campaign may require travel on a regular basis or periodically. Where the need arises for business travel, appropriate compensation as outlined by the Fair Labor Standards Act will apply.
