The Office of Advancement oversees and guides the fundraising efforts of the entire Smithsonian and is home to the central advancement organization for the Institution. In addition to raising significant support for a variety of Smithsonian initiatives, the Office of Advancement provides support services to advancement offices across the Institution. The office engages with staff throughout the Smithsonian in accomplishing their goals.
The Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Advancement seeks an experienced candidate to fill the role of the Assistant Director of Online Engagement and Fundraising. This position is responsible for planning, managing, executing, and increasing the Institution’s digital philanthropy efforts. This work encompasses formulating digital philanthropy and outreach strategies that represent the needs and interests of the entire Institution, integration of membership programs, the Institution’s email engagements, and support of new and emerging strategies and special projects. The successful candidate will have experience with omni-channel program integration and cross-collaboration with internal and external partners. The Assistant Director manages an office that creates a high volume of content and provides services to execute and manage online engagement and fundraising initiatives. The incumbent is responsible for meeting an annual fundraising goal. The Assistant Director supervises a team of three staff members and multiple contractors.
Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong background in online engagement and fundraising strategy, communications, and technical knowledge of digital marketing practices and techniques. Applicants should demonstrate strong writing and editing skills, experience in the creation of web-based content, and understanding of data analytics and reporting. The ideal candidate will have experience with Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Luminate Online (formerly Convio), as well as comparable email programs, HTML, and photo-editing programs. Strong organizational, relationship, collaboration, and communication skills as well as the ability to work independently are necessary. Experience in complex omni-channel integrated strategies with internal and external strategic partners at a national, higher education, or a large cultural nonprofit organization required. A bachelor’s degree is required.
