The board and staff of the YMCA of Walla Walla are seeking a CEO who will demonstrate strong executive leadership and promote a culture of integrity, excellence, and stewardship. Qualified candidates must have an inclusive management style to engage, empower, and motivate leadership staff to lead their departments in alignment with YMCA’s mission and strategic vision. The CEO must be a dynamic leader capable of developing and strengthening community partnerships by instilling confidence, credibility, and trust in the YMCA with other community leaders and donors. 

The YMCA of Walla Walla launched a capital campaign in early 2018 to upgrade and expand the YMCA’s facilities to better meet the needs of our community. This requires the new CEO to work in partnership with the board and development director to lead ongoing fundraising efforts through communication of the YMCA’s mission-focused vision and strategic plan.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Key Deliverables Include:

  • Build and Manage the Staff Team. Evaluate current strengths and development opportunities of all key staff and create a plan to build unity, encourage teamwork, and foster individual staff development. Establish an individual development plan for each direct report. Hire, motivate, nuture, retain, and hold staff accountable for key objectives. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie and sense of mission/purpose. Create a learning organization that encourages all staff members to learn, grow, and develop. Ensure adherence to YMCA policies and procedures. 
    • Key Competencies: Team building; talent motivation; inspiring creativity and resourcefulness; and enriching YMCA culture. 
  • Establish a Culture. Strengthen a culture of inclusion, integrity, character, and lifelong learning within the YMCA. We want a strong culture that exemplifies the YMCA’s mission, unifies the team, encourages a member-focused approach by all staff, and promotes the YMCA’s vision while living the values of honesty, respect, responsibility, caring, and empowering others to succeed.

  • Implement a Strategic Plan. Have the ability to work effectively with the board of directors and key staff to update and execute the strategic plan. This requires an ongoing assessment to address opportunities and challenges related to the community’s needs. Lead staff in the development and implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. The YMCA is currently in the middle of a capital campaign to expand its facilities. The CEO must have experience with capital projects and campaigns, and plan to take leadership of this project in partnership with the board.

  • Improve Operating Performance and Budget Management. Establish a process to create, implement, and monitor a budget following accepted business practices. Use a high level of financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth, and stability while consistently leading the organization to balance operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff leaders on the successful financial operation of their areas of responsibility. Monitor the budget closely to address competition that may impact membership, facility needs, and anticipate impact on revenue and expenses. Work with the board to develop an annual tactical plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives. Remain fully informed of all operational issues and have the keen ability to quickly address any issues that might arise, as well as forecast any future needs, all while keeping open lines of communication with the board.

  • Lead and Support Fundraising Efforts. Serve as a leader in fundraising efforts by partnering with the board and development director to achieve our current capital campaign’s fundraising goal. Promote public and private partnerships and resource development to enhance capital and annual contributions to support scholarships and our endowment. 
    • Key Competencies: Setting, pursuing, and attaining goals; personal persuasion and charisma; skilled at “The Ask“ as well as closing the deal; networking. 
Educational Background: 
Accredited 4-year college degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Minimum of five years experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
  • Budgetary and fiscal management experience more than $3M annually.
  • Must have proven ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.

Preferred Qualifications for Candidates:

  • Strategic planning and fundraising experience, including annual campaigns and the securing of grants.
  • YMCA Organizational Leader Certification. (Note: Candidates not in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain it through Y-USA.)
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary Range:  $95,000 - $115,000

Benefits: 10% retirement contribution from the Y, medical coverage, vacation, and other benefits per personnel policy included.
